So true. I'm considering a whole house generator because of that.We will see more of these problems as the power grid in the US becomes more fragile and unreliable.
I guess there is not enough cause to warrant it, but American homes (all homes?) are very much under protected from things like outages and brown outs and spikes and lightning strikes (when they easily could be). "Back in the day," when appliances weren't smart or computerized, really only mechanical things, outages and brown-outs wouldn't cause much damage, if any.
Now, even my toaster has an integrated circuit in it! Just about everything in our homes does. But whole-house electrical protections have not become more prevalent, even as the grid supply becomes worse every day.
Directly connecting a $3500 laptop to the power pole outside with a solid copper wire is just asking for it (he says as he types doing that very thing)!!
