Draining a Pool (and keeping it empty)

We are replacing our current pool next spring. The pool is 19 years old and this will be a preemptive replacement before the wall rusts completely out at the bottom and blows out. I siphoned the water out but rain is of course refilling it. I want to leave the pool where it is so rain, etc doesn't wash the sand away over the winter. I want to keep the water out so I am not dealing with a mess come spring. There is a pad under the liner that runs about 12" up the wall. If I were to poke a few holes in the liner, would the water be able to get out or would it be trapped by the pad? I have the pool cover pump and could buy a larger sump pump if necessary.

If you want to keep an empty pool up then brace the walls with 2X4s and hope for the best.

Thanks. I am familiar with the risks. There's about 4" of water in the pool right now and it's made it through several storms in the last 2 weeks. A few years ago, there was a leak in the liner that showed up late in the season. when I closed the pool, I figured I'd just let it drain down to the level of the leak and then I'd fix it in the spring. All the water drained out. The pool sat empty all winter without an issue. I don't care if this time it falls down. I just want it there to protect the sand under it.
