Previously I've been lax when closing so I'm trying to do things more correctly this time around. The Pool School closing procedure mentions removing the spider gasket; I would assume this is to prevent freeze damage if the valve doesn't drain completely? The last couple seasons just putting the valve into Winter position and draining thoroughly seems to have worked fine. Is that actually good enough, or should I pull the gasket anyway as a precaution?
Does the MPV/spider gasket really need to be removed when closing if the valve has a Winter position?
