Hi, silly question but I am wondering if it is necessary to remove the salt cell for winter months in Sacramento area, California, and replace it with a dummy pipe, or if it’s okay to leave it in place? We did not close our pool, since we have an attached hot tub and the pump still turns on daily for 8 hrs. Of course the water is too cold for the SWG to generate chlorine so I’m putting liquid chlorine in as needed.

Thank you!

my,

I live in the DFW area and have three saltwater pools. Like you, my pools do not get closed in the winter. My pumps run 24/7.

In total the pools are over 25 years old, and I have never removed the cells in the winter.

I see no reason to remove the cells as long as your pump is running when the temperature drops below freezing.

Thanks,

Jim R.

And it never gets below freezing in Dallas ☃️ LOL couldn’t resist

Also here in the Sacramento area...
I did remove mine (first year with it) for a couple of reasons:
1) I bought a dummy cell and wanted to use it.
2) I wanted to clean the cell, but it ended up not really needing it.
3) I figured since the dummy cell was now already in place I'll just leave it there til spring, since that means just a little less wear and tear on the cell.

In a climate that may freeze for a couple days, I wouldn't bother removing the cell. (Feel free to use the dummy cell for the sole reason of 'you have it'......... I get it (y))

I bring my SWG inside because I see no reason to leave it buried in a snow drift for several weeks at a time. It can handle it, I gladly recognize that. *I* can't handle it. :ROFLMAO:
