Diverter valve suction line question

I've been repairing the actuator on a diverter valve that controls the suction lines from my pool and spa flowing into the filter pump.

I believe this is the original configuration of the valve, but in my infinite wisdom I didn't take accurate pictures of the valve before I replaced it.

Now I'm studying the configuration and can't figure out how it's working.

The pins on the valve cover are configured for 90 degree rotation. Why is this? Doesn't this mean that if I turn the valve, it will shut off flow to the filter pump, and connect the pool and spa suction lines? Did I install the new valve incorrectly here?

Remove the handle and it will make much more sense. Place the pins in both 180s so the off tag rotates 180 degrees facing away from pump.

Thank you for replying! The return line actuator/diverter valve is configured the way you said, but not the suction line valve. The pins are configured for R90. Why would it have been installed this way originally?

Someone probably shoved the pins in not knowing what they do. The pins are only for manual use if it was on an actuator the pins don’t matter. Take the handle off put it on the actuator see where the valve should be, put the handle back on the valve and turn it to match.

@Poolbreh I'll try configuring it for 180 degrees. I'm amazed it's been configured this way for 10 years (or was changed recently) and I never noticed. Thank you.

Some background: my spa has been draining overnight, and I'm having trouble fixing the issue. I've replaced the spa return line check valve, but that didn't seem to fix it. Since then, I've been examining the diverter valves and actuators for problems, and noticed the diverter configured this way on the suction side.

If the handles were on the actuators the pins don’t mean much. I would make sure the actuators are turning and stopping at that 180 mark. The good part is you have shut offs to most of the potential problems it will make it easier to diagnose through trial and error. How far your spa drains down is a good indication on where to look.

Be sure the handle only swings toward the pump from either position.
