Diamataceous Earth: is there really any harm?

According to the guides here at TFP: “Gardening DE, while safer to handle, has not been heat treated and therefore is not suitable for use in pool filters.”

Why does it matter if it’s heat treated or not? It’s not coming in contact with anyone. I just want to use what I have on hand and want to know if this guidance is just an over abundance of caution. The reasoning behind this specific guidance would be appreciated very much!

Because it does not work as a filter if it isn't heat treated.

It will go through the filter & cloud up your pool.
I almost did that then saw a post from someone who did. They had a mess to clean up.

So pool grade only.

And regarding the statement that garden grade DE is safer to handle: Pool grade DE contains crystalline silica (as a result of the heat treatment), which is required to use it as a filter, but it also makes it a carcinogen when breathed in.

And for that reason, I'm only using cellulose fiber as a sand filter aid.
