Define “Crystal Clear”

Every year I feel like my water always has a tiny milky white haze to it. This has happened between two AGPs. So, it got me thinking:

1. What does crystal clear mean to you?

So clear that if the water was 100ft deep you’d see the bottom like it was right in front of you?

I’ve attached a pic of my current pool after slamming it from a green swamp over the past 6 days. It looks waaaay better but I’m just not sure it’s “crystal clear”. I’m still getting some overnight loss so I’ll keep up the slam, but I ran out of test reagents today and they don’t come till Monday so I’ll have to guess a bit.

2. Could it be some aeration I’m seeing there making it look white-ish? My filter can’t be totally sealed off from letting air back with the return. It’s one of those Intex returns that has a valve on the back for aeration and even with plastic wrap over the cover it still lets some in.

How Clear is TFP Clear?

I check the orientation of the Phillips screws in my main drains. They are cocked like x's and not +'s.

In a 3700(?) gallon pool, it will be easy for swimmers to make the water react more like a large hot tub (people soup) than a pool.

Between sweat, sunblock, body oils, residual shampoos and laundry sauces, it may take the filter a couple days to remove the haze after swimming. Dosing high before swimming may help leave less residuals after.

Tennis balls work amazing for sucking up surface oils/haze. I keep 3+ in the pool at all times.

+1 for tennis balls or scum bugs - very helpful for the sun screen etc. I always throw one in for parties.
For now, don’t fret about the clarity, if it’s still an issue after you have passed the oclt then you may want to add a tiny bit of de if you have a sand filter & are home to watch it.

Add DE to a Sand Filter

A clean pool filter will increase the efficiency of your pool! ... your filter are to backwash it, clean the manifolds and grids, and add new DE.

Are you still having accumulation on the floor? That being gone is a big part of the “crystal clear” criteria.

Thanks for the tips folks!

I’ll definitely try the tennis balls. I have been vacuuming every day and will keep up the oclt until it is looking good. Might just be a “keep at it” thing. Next season I think I will try to cover better (the cover that came with the pool has drain holes in it so I had hundreds of litres of rain get in) and keep up some chlorine so I’m no so far behind when I open it.

Close late, open early, and if you can mix once or twice when its not frozen, it will help alot.
