Dedicated Gas Meter to Pool Heater

Hi,

Has anyone installed a dedicated gas meter to their pool heater and if so, can you share what product you used and what type of service provider did the work?

I want to install a dedicated gas meter reader to my pool heater and am not finding any information online about people doing this? I assumed this would be a common thing to do for those renting out their homes such as I do in which rather than charging an average surcharge for use of the pool and spa, I simply want to charge the guest back the cost relative to the actual amount of gas used during the stay specific to the pool heater.

The only gas meter I have found so far is on the web site ekm metering and the product is the 1.5" Pulse Output Gas Meter - PGM-150. Their customer support says it should work for my use, but that I should confirm this with a plumber. So far, every plumber I have contacted says they do not provide this service and the only service provider so far that says they are willing to do this is an HVAC company who says they know someone who can do it, which sounds sketchy.

thanks!

How much other gas do you use? Relative to a spa and a pool, the gas usage of the typical home is pretty negligible most of the time except in cold locations in the winter. Here in the midwest anyway the gas for hot water and cooking was about $3-5 a month in the summer when heat wasn't running, which was much smaller than the fixed customer charge of $15-$20 a month. Could you not just use the main meter you already have to do this metering/charging? Or is there a big gas usage that isn't related to the pool/spa? Or some other reason I'm missing, such as a main meter that can't be read locally.

I think @jseyfert3 has the right idea. Determine what the average gas usage is by month and anything over that was for heating the pool/spa.

I have not done it but from what I have read if you want 2 gas meters, they make you bring in two lines from the main at the street. This becomes expensive with excavation, installing the line, etc!

That product will probably work.
Only certain people get the certification to do gas line work. You might try contacting your local gas company. They will likely be able to steer you in the right direction. Or your local pool store may have someone they use.

Our pool has a dedicated meter. When the pool was installed in '76, that was the only way to get gas to that side of the property. The gas company did the original job. I have had additions made to it and the updated meter itself was supplied by the gas company, ( they want our business) and the new lines where installed by a plumber.
