Can you use a skimmer sock for the CYA sock method? Or does it have to be a regular sock? (Skimmer socks are a lot thinner in material and am worried about adding to much CYA at once)
I use skimmer socks with no problem. (Just don’t use disposable hairnets)
Whatever works. The point is to not pour the granules down the skimmer as the bottles tell you to, in case you have to backwash before they are done dissolving.

You want the CYA fully dissolved in your pool water. Applying into your return will eventually get it to your pool unless it gets trapped in your filter media and you backwash before its fully disolved. Dissolving in front of a return avoids this issue and is more direct. CYA is acidic so avoid prolonged contact with with the pool surface or equipment before it disolves.
