Hello,
I’ve been using my Taylor Pro Salt test kit exclusively for testing my pool water since I got it about a month ago. The CyA test is kind of subjective in the regard that I can make a case that I can see the black dot in the vial at very high levels. My last test I figured my CyA was about 50 so I added 2 lbs of dry stabilizer which should have only raised the level by about 15 according to effects of adding. This was 4 days ago.

I just tested the water again with a generic test strip and the color shows that the CyA is about 150. According to TFP, this is way too high for my salt water pool. Currently my FC is 7. Any ideas on how I should handle? Is there a way to lower CyA if I need to besides removing water?

Open the nearest trash bin and toss the test strips right in it.

If you're really having difficulty reading the CYA test you may want to check out the 50 ppm CYA standard. It will let you get a good idea what 50 ppm looks like, allow you to adjust your lighting until you're seeing what you should see, and then use that to base future testing on. When testing CYA use only the Taylor kit - switching to test strip is not very reliable.
Ensure you have an 50/50 mixture of pool water and R0013 reagent. Shake it well and let it sit. Then have sun to your back when pouring into the CYA tube. I find it best to pour to a given mark, Let’s say 90 and look in the vial. If you see dot then pour to 80 mark, do you see dot? Continue this until you cannot see the dot and use the last decade mark where you saw the dot as your CYA.
This prevents you from constantly looking at the dot while pouring and also ensure you only record decade numbers for CYA.
