CYA & FC

The dip sticks won't be able to help you. You have to have a reading on FC more than "somewhere between 5 and 10ppm" or "above 10ppm".
Hi IceShadow,

I ordered the proper test kit but it won't be delivered until Friday. I have steadily added bleach yesterday by best guess estimate because all I had were test strips and pool math app. Pool is much less green today so I am super excited. It is cloudy though with a tint of green but huge improvement. Dipstick said FC was 10 but who knows it could be higher since I don't have new test kit yet. I assumed it was 10 and added 1 gallon a 1/2 hour ago so that algae won't take hold again. Any suggestions or thoughts until my test kit comes?

Typical recommendation is to add 5ppm FC worth of bleach/liquid chlorine in daily until the dropper kit arrives - then post full test results when you get it and we can help from there!

Reactions: Debs Pool
Hi all, finally received my K-2006 test kit. Here are the numbers FC 6.2 CC .4 ph 7.6 TA 120 CYA 45. These results were taken Saturday. I took a quick dipstick test this morning before work (lack of time), and readings were CYA at 0 (doesn't make sense cause I only added a little water to pool), FC was only 1ppm (weekend was sunny and warm) and TA was in OK range (don't remember exact number). Perhaps dipsticks are not reliable? Water is very slightly cloudy but mostly clear and no green. Any thoughts?

When testing in slam mode only test FC and CC and use the 10ml sample(each drop is .5ppm) so you dont waste reagents. Also when testing CYA you round up to whole numbers 50 in your case. Follow this FC/CYA Levels for slam levels at 50CYA.

SLAM is the process of raising chlorine to shock level and then maintaining that level until the three criteria are met. People who are new to this sometimes think it's a one or two time "hit it hard and hope for the best" kinda deal. Follow the process exactly and you'll have a clear pool! :paddle:
