My pool CYA is at least 150 I used the strips AND my Taylor kit I bought per this forums suggestion. I’d suggest the reading is 150 from the Taylor cya test method… I’m not interested in figuring out how to drain water. Can I simply let the pool water sit for a week without adding chemicals to dissolve the cya levels down to an OK level? I put my hose in today while the pump was off for 3 hours and it just filled the pool really high. 🤦

Draining is very different than diluting.

If you try to dilute your way out of high CYA, you'll still be working on it 3 years from now.

Focus on removing the bad water and avoid repeating what got you there.

Chandler,

It has not really worked for our members that have tried it..

Basically they sell you an expensive bag of 'magic'..

Then, when it only reduces your CYA by 5 or 10 ppm, they will gladly sell you several more expensive bags of more magic.

If does a poor job of lowering your CYA, but does a great job of increasing your Pool Store's profits..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Probably 10-15000 gallons. CYA is 150 ish and I go through a gallon of liquid chlorine a day just in order to swim for a couple hours. It’s not manageable. I need to drain I guess…. So, can someone show me recommended pump and stuff to buy and how much to drain? Thank you IMG_4494.jpeg

You need to replace around 2/3 of your water to lower your CYA. Did you do a diluted CYA test to get to 150?

For a no-drain water exchange, you'll just need a submersible pump and garden hose (avail on Amazon, etc for less than $100).

So, do I buy something like the Wayne pump? next, float the pump in my pool, turn my pool pump off and turn OFF the water line to my pool? Once water is down to a good level, do I just turn my water line to my pool back on and my auto fill float valve will refill my pool? Or do I need to use a garden hose? I have an auto fill next to my skimmer. Thanks!

1hp submersible are ~$45.

When I drained my pool for high CYA years ago, I pulled 60% of water out, then had 3 garden hoses in the pool.
Also on a well and took about 6-7 hours to refill.

I think I’ll just do what you did

I think I will just copy what you did, reggiehammond. Thank you for helping me out. So, turn my water line and pool pump off, drop the submersible 1hp pump in and let it drain 60% out or so. When satisfied with the drain level, drop a garden hose back in and turn my pool water line back on? That simple? And just attach a long hose to my submersible pump because there will be A LOT of water in the woods, right? Shouldn’t take long for syphoned water to evaporate in the Texas sun!

You want to refill as fast as possible; given the heat, I would go out and hose down all exposed plaster as well.

Consider the no-drain water exchange if your well water is much colder than pool water. Info contained in link I posted earlier re: Draining.
