Cutting the cord-anybody else?

Wait. Why would the channels cut off at night? @Mdragger88

Aha! Nevermind- I looked it up. Wild. What a fun fact.
After the jet with the national anthem and the waving flag, this is what appeared along with an annoying beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep then white noise

You would think being literally 1.5 blocks from the hub for all fiber, optics, telephone and cable connections for the tri county area, that we would have more than two options for ISP: Cable (Insert monopoly here) or Satellite (Insert other monopoly here). I have pleaded with several companies to bring fiber from the hub as there are lots of folks in our neighborhood who want healthy competition for a reliable ISP.

When I was a kid tv shut off at 2:00 AM and started up again at 6:00 AM. Now its programs until 2:00 AM followed by infomercials until 4:00 AM when we either get early network news or local news starts. What I remember was when a broadcast station would have technical difficulties. It was being on hold with customer service is now, except they say "we are experiencing technical difficulties, please stand by" instead of "your call will be answered in the order in which it was received". Oh and the local station always played the instrumental passage from Layla while they tried to get things working again.

Falling a sleep on the couch and waking us to white noise :)

Anyone wanna sing along ? I KNOW y'all know the words !!
My dad owned a TV repair shop and bought one of the 1st VCR's..I remember is was around $950 and the remote was corded.
When I was around 12 or 13 I would go hang out and help them. My job was to take this giant box of tunes and test them then put them in bins if they passed

I always thought it was interesting at the high speed options we have available. We are out in the country (no muni water or sewage kind of "in the country") yet have 2 choices for gig-speed internet (actually maybe 3? Not sure what the phone company has available).

I've been thinking about this myself. Its not THAT much easier than saying Alexa turn off the lights, but every little bit helps, amirite ?
My issue with Alexa is sometimes the outlets lose connectivity. Nothing like getting all settled in bed and asking her to turn off the light and nothing happens. :(

-Oh and to my defense, the only reason we are using this is that the on/off knob on that lamp is stripped and I have been too lazy to replace it. ;)

I recall when my parents got their first VCR in the early 80s. The programming for the channels was an absolute pain...you had to "dial in" EVERY. SINGLE. CHANNEL. It was a long and tedious process. Pretty sure I couldn't figure that out today!

Shut up and smile, I always say. :) Many in area like yours have nothing but satellite internet which equates to modern day dialup.

1 is ok, but pricey as with multiple choices they are forced to compete. I always found this hysterical because they fight tooth and nail over the customer that's going to leave them as soon as the introductory price resets. This month's new subscribers are next year's churn and they only broke even in between. It's been going on for so long that they have convinced the public that the introductory deal is the accepted price for service.

My grandma would tape her soaps while she was at work - there were like codes to program what time/channel the vcr recorded. I remember the codes being printed in the TV Guide. It was definitely complicated. Once I touched the vcr & I guess I messed up the programming- it was one of the only times in my life she ever got angry with me. I never touched the vcr again! 😬

Oh yes, I remember that...no problem with that. BUT it was the "dialing in the channels" that was such a pain. If I recall, there were only a few presets available and you couldn't record every channel that was available. You can see them on the lower right hand portion of this model. I still have a lot of tapes my parents recorded...it's kinda fun to see the old programs and the local commercials. Oh, and I think my Mom recorded EVERY SINGLE UNC game that Michael Jordan played.

I wonder - what time would the tv work again? Did the national anthem play again to start the new day?
TV went off at 2:00 AM EST and began again at 6:00 AM. No, the national anthem did not play again.

When I lived in NZ, here is how one station went off the air

I like that one. What was the bottle Kiwi left on the porch? I would assume a milk bottle but I don't know. Did they do a "wake up Kiwi" video? I didn't see one (didn't look too hard, though).
