Connecting Hayward Heater to Pentair Panel Help

Having trouble getting a Hayward Heater to connect to Pentair EasyTouch Panel for a client. See pics for how it is currently wired. As far as I can tell, it's a 24V connection on the heater board and 18V(?) on the pentair side, though it's connected to the heater port on the pentair panel.

I don't know the exact heater model, but I've included a picture of it (and i'm not on site).

Is this just a mode configuration error on the hayward heater? Reading through the latest manual for an HC model, it states:

2-WIRE REMOTE CONTROL CONNECTION: Connect the appropriate wires from the remote control to the factory harness ORANGE wire(“POOL”) and WHITE wire (“COM”). To configure the heater for 2-wire remote thermostat control, use the “MODE” key on the heater keypad toput the control into “STANDBY” mode. Then simultaneously press and hold the “( - )” and “MODE” keys for 3 seconds until “bo” (bypassoperation) is displayed. Once in bypass operation, press the ‘MODE’ button until ‘POOL’ or ‘SPA’ LED is illuminated. The control is now readyto operate in 2-wire remote thermostat control. The heater’s thermostat will only function to limit the return water temperature to a maximum of104°F. To switch back to local thermostat control, use the “MODE” button on the keypad to put the control into “STANDBY” mode. Then simultaneously press and hold the “( - )” and “MODE” buttons for 3 seconds until “bo” disappears from the display. Using the “MODE” button to put the heater in either “POOL” or “SPA” mode will start the heater on local thermostat.

I was going to head out there and call Hayward while on site for technical support, but any tips in advance would be helpful.

The directions say:

Connect the appropriate wires from the remote control to the factory harness ORANGE wire(“POOL”) and WHITE wire (“COM”).

The wire is connect to SPA. Move it to POOL.

J19 heater relay has no voltage to the heater.

That is not a HC model. It is the Universal H Series model.

It looks like the heater has 3 different places to connect the remote.

For a 2 wire like a fireman's switch, connect to Common and Pool.

The heater display needs to say bO for bypass operation.

Yes, currently it's on spa, but our tech did try the pool connection as well. The heater would fire up when manually controlled, but in bypass mode, it wouldn't fire up.

There should be a remote connection on the circuit board and then one on each side of the heater.

So block A on the heater goes to the pentair board, correct? What remote connection is attaching to the side of the heater?

Edit: I just called hayward tech support. They said the side connections in this use case are irrelevant. Their only other suggestion, based on what I could share, was to ensure the heater was put into pool mode once in BO. I'll run out there this afternoon to try that.

2-WIRE REMOTE CONTROL CONNECTION:

To configure the heater for 2- wire remote thermostat control, use the “MODE” key on the heater keypad to put the control into “STANDBY” mode.

Then press and hold both the “DOWN” and “MODE” keys for 3 seconds until the display shows the code “bo”.

On the remote control wiring terminal block (Figure 22), connect the appropriate wires from the remote control to the terminals adjacent to the ORANGE wire (“POOL”) and WHITE wire (“24V”).

To operate the heater by remote thermostat, the heater’s control must be in either “POOL” or “SPA” mode.

The display will show “bo”.

The “POOL” or “SPA” LED will be illuminated.

The remote thermostat will operate the heater.

The heater’s thermostat will function to limit the water temperature to a maximum of 104°F.

You go from the Pentair Heater control to any of the three Remote connections on the heater.

You connect to Pool and Common.

Then, put the heater in bypass mode and once in bypass, press the 'MENU ICON' button until 'POOL' or 'SPA' is illuminated.

Hey, it worked! So yes, my tech had indicated he had tried both positions, but maybe something about the sequence, or selecting spa for the 2 wire remote and pool on the mode or vice versa... But I sent another guy out there and walked him through it and it worked. Thanks for making me that much smarter today!
