Clueless! New to forum

Here's what I have followed for years:

Collect your water sample after the pool pump has been running for at least one hour. Submerge the bottle at least 8" deep in front of your skimmer, invert, and allow it to fill with pool water. Remember to rinse the bottle with pool water first!

Day 8 update: I'm keeping the SLAM FC level up to 19 now (with the new pool size calculations). Overnight dropped from FC 21 to 13.5, but I was about 2 hours later than usual when I started testing. Maybe I'm overly optimistic today, but it does seem a lighter yellowish green. I brushed up a lot of brown junk. Day 8 pics:

Just to offer you some more encouragement... Today (3 weeks from when I started my SLAM) i'm finally able to see the bottom of my pool.. the water is blue, and I believe i'm just a day or 2 away from finishing my SLAM...
My pool started out looking exactly like yours did...

Thanks so much for the encouragement everyone, I really need it and appreciate it :D

Day 9: Wednesday is my day to babysit grandbabies during the summer, so I was out all day & I'm late posting. I was successful in keeping up the higher FC none the less!! Last night at 9:30pm was at FC 20 & this morning at 6:30am was only down to 17!! Pool Math said add 81oz. to get back to 19 but, I new I would be gone all day, so I went crazy & added 2 jugs!! I don't know how high it went up during the day today, but when I tested again at 6:30 tonight, it was at FC 17!! CC is 1 - 1.5 (not sure if it went clear on the second or third drop). Day 9 pics:

Day 10 update:

Slooooow going :( There will definitely be NO swimming here this Fourth of July weekend :(
I am keeping SLAM FC level up to 19 successfully, consistently losing 2ppm overnight. At FC 17 again this morning, adding a little water today, it's been very hot & there is some loss to evaporation. Brushing & running polaris. Day 10 pics:

Hey...... Is that blue in my pool !!!?????? YES, blue sky, NOT blue water :(

Oh yes, I installed my new glycerin-filled psi gauge from TFTestKits.net !!! Isn't she beautiful??? :D (The old one in my hand LOL)

Day 12: The pool's chlorine consumption has drastically decreased, only losing .5ppm overnight!! I'm hoping we (the pool & I) have turned a corner in this battle:D As you can see from the pics.... still green, but much lighter than 2 weeks ago! Day 12 pics:

So, I have a few questions today. I'm thinking that circulation may not be ideal in my pool. There is no drain in the bottom  just a skimmer in the side wall. At the bottom of the skimmer there are 2 holes, but only one is sucking in water. Is this how it is supposed to be & what is the second hole??

Also, can I run the booster pump without the polaris attached to improve circulation? It makes a lot of noise with nothing attached & is whisper quiet with polaris attcahed. Booster pump is new last summer.

Next... I have 3 built in stairs at the shallow end with 2 return jets at the base that are not blowing out water. Do I turn them on with this??? (On top of stairs)

Or this??? (In front of filter/pump)

Thanks so much everyone  With your help, I am setting myself up for an enjoyable future with a TROUBLE FREE POOL :goodjob:

That is quite a color change. I see shades of blue in there!

I have no idea what the dial thing is at the top of the steps.

The pipe one----the one that is sideways is turned OFF, as in no water flow, if it is like mine. Handle in line with the pipe is on, handle sideways is off. Can you turn it?

Extra pump to help move water-No reason not to turn it on and move the water. Can you point it so it points at the bottom to help move the water around and towards the skimmer?

Skimmer-sorry no idea as I have an aboveground pool so my skimmer is much different that yours.

Keep it up! You are getting there!

Kim

Hey Kim,

Thanks so much!! I did manage to get that handle turned to the open position & sure enough, the stair jets came on!! However, while that part is open, the polaris connection does not have much power at all. That probably explains why it was off. I'm going to leave it open to try to improve circulation around the pool. Now that I know what it does, I can turn it back for polaris use :D

Still hoping to hear if anyone knows about my skimmer.... thanks again!

"There is no drain in the bottom just a skimmer in the side wall. At the bottom of the skimmer there are 2 holes, but only one is sucking in water. Is this how it is supposed to be & what is the second hole??"

I'll try to find the answer for it as I have a clue but not a cohesive answer. In the meantime, both my skimmers are that way so it can be normal and likely is for your installation.

For the step return jets. You can also have it open just a little. See what works best for you and what you are doing at the moment.

Now to figure out the little dial on the steps..................oh and the skimmer LOL It is always something new to learn!

You are so close!

Kim

The second hole in the skimmer could go nowhere; it could go to a port in the side wall below the skimmer, or it could go to the main drain. If it goes to an open port or the drain, there should be a diverter valve somewhere.

The way the spaceship works.... there's a flap underneath that allows you to balance the suction between the drain and the skimmer. If the water level falls too low, a float inside gets sucked down, blocking the flow, and then all the suction goes to the port below or to the main drain, which keeps the pump from losing prime.

I'd nose around and see if there's any mystery objects in the garage or shed or wherever.
