Hi all,

So I've had my pool for about a year and a half and have followed the TFP methods the entire time (except CYA...see below) without any issues (until now). I added an IntelliChem last year and didn't have any issues keeping the chemistry good; however, I am having issues now.

My FC level was around 1.5 for a month now (is that level too low for a salt pool?), with no issues, but quickly dropped to a little over 0 overnight (system was off for 10 hours overnight) and suddenly needed a backwash. In the morning, the water was cloudy (which has never happened before). I backwashed and the pressure is already about 1/2 way to needing a backwash again.

In case you need the rest of my readings:

Temp = 85
pH = 7.5
TA = 60 (just added some baking soda to get to 80)
CH = 300 (just added to get to 350)
CYA = a little over 30...I know that's low for a salt pool, but I heard that increasing it to the recommended TFP levels can lead to issues getting accurate ORP readings on my IntelliChem. I know that ORP isn't the best way to measure chlorine, but I was giving it a shot as I work a lot and was hoping for as much automation as possible.

The system had the IntelliChlor running all day, but it just barely was keeping the levels from 0.5 to 1...so I added a couple gallons of liquid bleach to help it fight whatever's gong on. Should I just give in and shock the pool? I know that would be the quick way to clear up the water, but I was trying to avoid that as we're planning on having company over to swim in a few days and were hoping bumping up the level a bit would do the trick...but there won't be swimming anyway if the water is cloudy.

Any other thoughts? Thanks for your time!

It is ok to run your CYA lower but you need to maintain your FC higher. I would go ahead and keep it between 4 and 6 as recommended for non-SWG pools. In any case 1.5 is below minimum for CYA at 30 and definitely won't work. [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]

Bump FC up to 12 and keep it there and hopefully it will clear up and not get worse.

Thanks for the advice. I got the FC up to 12 last night and this morning the water was clear, and the FC level was 11.5, so it's looking like that solved the problem. I'll keep the FC between 4 and 6, as you mentioned...just have to tweak the IntelliChem to figure out what ORP that range will fall into.
