Cloudy again after rains.

Just an update, I adjusted my gallons after recalculating w/Pool Calculator. It was about 200 gal off from what we were told last year by the pool store.

Chlorine back down to 9 🤦CYA was 40 this afternoon. I know the sun eats a lot up but it has been overcast most of day today, at least in my area. Is 40 of CYA enough to protect my chlorine or is it just busy eating up organics? No change in water. I'm just going to keep on SLAMing and see what happens. Thanks to all.

Stay the course (y) It doesn’t always go perfect to a schedule. Does the ole 2 steps forward one step back kinda thing. You got this. Be patient with your chin up.

I just thought I would update you that I did some reading and we decided to pull out the ladder and I think we've found our mystery algae, lol. Yes, as new pool owners we did not check or clean out our ladder after it sat outside of the pool all winter(in FL). It is full of dark green algae. We are drilling larger holes in it and going to fill it with bleach. Will post pics in a few.

Looking better already. Continuing to SLAM.

I am seeing water quality improvement since we removed & cleaned interior ladder. I'm thinking probably too soon for OCLT since
I've only reached SLAM level once in last 24 hours. I'm still working out the duplicate pool issue. Anyone looking at my logs, scroll down to June 1 for most recent history, thank you for your patience.

I might suggest using quarts and eyeballing a quart or two at a time rather than measuring out 11oz or 77oz of chlorine, etc. Nothing wrong with but it might be a bit easier to keep up since it seems to be using all the chlorine you give it.

So just round up to the nearest quart? I can do that. I am struggling to get to and keep the SLAM level up.
We put the ladder back in today after douching it with chlorine and rinsing it until the water ran clear out of it.

If the pool is green, I think eyeballing it is close enough especially if you are having trouble getting the level up high enough. It’s either using all that chlorine or the pool size estimate is too small.

It's not green, still slightly cloudy but I can see the bottom now so it is slowly improving. I just updated the pool size in my account the other day using pool calculator. It was previously off by about 202 gal. but Idk if that made a huge difference on suggested additions of chlorine. Thank you!

Gem I’m getting an ever bigger difference

9 (radius) squared X 3.14 X 50 inches (pool is never full to the brim) X 7.481 gallons per cu ft =
7928 gallons.

And that’s if it’s perfectly 4 inches below the top. Each inch up or down is 158.5 gallons so you will rarely see the perfect volume, between evaporation and rain. But, an inch is only 2% of your volume or test results so it will be nearly impossible to see the difference.

Well I suck at math so I'll just put that out there now lol! So if it is 7928 and I'm adding sanitizer based on 8800 then should I be having difficulty keeping SLAM levels?

It would give you extra FC that you didn’t plan on. And you should see it when you test 30 mins after adding as above your target, roughly 10% more

Ok. I've only been testing roughly every 2 hours. I know I'm def not seeing it after 2 hours. Should I check my CYA more frequently & add if needed ? I changed out the filter day before yesterday and again today after vacuuming, there was more green in it today than there was day before yesterday.

That’s awesome but you have to verify the adds, after you add them too. Give it 20-30 minutes after adding and verify you reached your target

You could have been using weakened bleach and not coming close to your target this whole time. You need to know you got where you needed to be. Otherwise the frequent testing matters a lot less because it’s well below SLAM the whole time anyway.

No need to keep testing the CYA. Nothing happens to it in the short term. TA, CH and PH don’t matter at the moment either. Just keep tabs on the FC.

You got this !!

Ok I'll do that. I always read on here not to test any more frequently than once per hour. I guess I figured if it takes say 2 1/2 hours for my whole pool to circulate, I would be getting the most accurate result 2 hours after adding. Thanks so much!

Just to clairify, that means nothing. Liquid chlorine and muriatic acid, the two liquid chemicals you use, are hydrophillic. They disperse in water rapidly. 'Turnover' is meaningless.

Even with good date codes, 2 bottles next to each other on the shelf could have come from different pallets. HD/Lowe’s/Walmart etc are notorious for either leaving the pallets out in the sun before they stock them, or even worse, leaving them ‘inside’ the garden area in the direct sun for weeks before moving them to the shelf. The only guarantee on strength is to verify yourself soon after adding. If you didn’t reach you target, add more accordingly and test *that* after 20 mins of mixing.

It’s less of a deal now because you are already cloudy and running a high FC to clear it, so if you are off you are still probably somewhat high. But in normal circumstances that can allow you to be below minimum and get another round of algae.

It’s totally ok and you simply didn’t know better. That’s why you have us. :)

Thanks, that is good to know! I'll be sure to check the FC after 20 min. going forward.
I can see the bottom this morning. FC 17 last night, 16 this morning.
