So I almost have the water below the return. I loosened the clamps, but I can’t seem to get the hose off the return. I’m worried I’m going to break something. Going to try to do it again tomorrow when I have more light.

Is it a traditional hard sided AG pool or an Intex/Bestway type. Typically with a traditional pool you loosen the clamp up a lot, give the hose a little twist and off it comes. If you installed it, it's got to come off assuming it wasn't glued on.

Standard flex hose attached to the return? As was said, loosen the clamp a lot more than you think you need to, then twist it back and forth. It will loosen.

It was installed by a pool company. As far as I know it wasn’t glued. I was tugging on it pretty hard.

Might try a standard hairdryer first if you’ve got one laying around. Lower heat than a heat gun but still be careful with it.
