Cleaner vs primer

Hi Everyone,

I may have messed up here. I was hard piping my pool equipment (original contractor provided hoses) and didn't use primer.

Im using 2" pressure rated schedule 40 pvc.

I used the oateys cleaner (yellow label) with oateys medium clear (red label) but didnt also use a primer. I originally thought the cleaner and primer was the same thing and just read that people use both.

How bad is this?

As long as it doesn't leak, don't worry about it. Especially with new pipe even primer is not always needed.

Thanks. It was going to be a buried fitting. I started over before seeing the reply.

Personally if we're talking buried I'd do it over and know it's done. On exposed work I'd let it be but make sure to pressure all and everything before backfilling the pipe.

Oatey cleaner (in the US, at least) is pretty much the same as Oatey primer, just without the purple dye. The smell should be a clue (acetone).

Yea. That's why I originally thought it was the same thing.

I replaced it all anyway. Live and learn.

Fwiw, I removed everything that I glued without primer.

I put a couple pipe wrenches on the a pipe and fittings to try to break a joint and it held. The pipe was bending but the joint didn't break.

It almost certainly would have been fine, but think about how good you're gonna sleep over it.
