Want to convert to saltwater next year and unsure on what size to buy.
We're in Toronto, and use the pool only 3 months in the year.
RJ-20 says for pools up to 20k and RJ-30 for up to 30k.
Of course I'm thinking 30k is better investement, but is there such a thing as overkill and unnecessary in SWG ?

The ratings assume 100% runtime so a 1X unit will need the pump to run 24/7 to produce enough chlorine in the peak season. (Maybe a little less for you so far up north). A 2X needs 12 hours of runtime and a 3X needs 8 hours of runtime. (Etc etc).

Your details aren't listed but assuming a single speed pump for your above ground pool, run time may be costlier than the SWG upgrade in the long run. Or maybe a wash. It's less of an issue with a variable speed pump because you won't consume nearly as much electric running it slow for the extra runtime durations.

I'm on a variable speed pump, upgraded to variable and it's a godsend.

The only downside to going very big is that you get to a point where the increments for "strength" aren't fine enough to give stable results by themselves. ie 15% results in steadily increasing Cl, but 10% means it steadily drops. But with the other variable of pump run time, there is still a lot of flexibility in the management to overcome that drawback.

I love my RJ-45+. Adding a Calimar VS pump this weekend along with replacement of the valves that have become difficult to turn with real diverter valves. I'm almost giddy.
