Chlorine/CYA Issues

Turn it off. It does not add enough FC to matter, and it will skew your readings. We like to monitor the FC drop organically to determine how well your SLAM is going. Keep pump running 24/7.

Test in 2 hours and report back. Also, how are you doing on reagents? You will use a lot during this SLAM so you might want to order up some more.

At SLAM levels of FC you can use the 10ml sample size to save on reagents. In a pinch you can use the 5ml sample but that is degrading the accuracy. For an OCLT switch back to the 10ml or 25ml test.

Okay, thank you for the advice on the testing. My kit is only a few weeks old, so I'm pretty good on reagents, but I may order some extras of a few things just in case. And I've got the chlorinator off (turned it off last night, so just wanted to make sure I should keep it off) and pump is set to run 24/7. Thank you guys!

Yes, leave the chlorinator off until you’re finished.

Ok, that is a big drop. Let’s try this add what pool math tells you. Wait 20 minutes for it to mix (help that with a brush). Then measure. Try using a 5ml sample. It will be less accurate, but we are just trying to hit a barn for now. Make sure that you got all the way to 31pmm. Your chlorine might not be as strong as you thought. We need to make sure that you reach SLAM level. If you are short after the 20 minutes we need to adjust the amount you are adding.

After you get to 31. Wait 4 hours and test again and adjust.

No, I had to stop adding after that first reading at 16.4 because I had kids coming to swim and I didn't want to add chlorine right before they were getting into the pool (I have some floaters that are only 12 months, so didn't want to cause them any issues). I just picked up more chlorine and retested the CYA. I think the CYA is actually closer to 70 now that I did the test in better lighting. So going to try

Its too early to try to pass an OCLT. You need to be testing as often as you can and maintaining that SLAM level.

How does that water look. Is it crystal clear? Also what type of lights do you have in the pool? If they have a niche did you remove the lights and brush the niche. Make sure you brush the inside of your skimmers.

Post pictures.

Okay just tested and I’m at 20.5. I’ll start adding and testing again. The pool looks completely clear. My lights are LEDs and are built into the wall and don’t have a ring around then to remove. I did brush inside the skimmers area, but not inside the skimmer basket part, should I do that?
