Chlorine/CYA Issues

Hi! I've been working hard to get my chemicals balanced in my SWG pool. Yesterday my chlorine was at 1, CYA was at 65, pH was at 8 and TA was at 110. Using the pool math tool, I added the recommended amount of chlorine and stabilizer last night, and then added MA this morning. Just retested and the chlorine is only at 1.6 and CYA is now at 55. pH is at 7.6 and TA is at 90. I added 45 oz of liquid chlorine last night and 16 oz of stabilizer, so I'm not sure why the numbers didn't raise (and even lowered) the numbers. Any advice? Do I just add more chlorine and stabilizer tonight? I'm concerned that the SWG isn't keeping up. I have it set to 70%, but we have had a lot of rain and high temps lately here in Houston. I've been having to add chlorine every week. Any advice is appreciated! :)

How does your water look? Don’t add any more stabilizer until we determine that you dont have an algae outbreak. By letting your FC drop below the minimum you most likely have an outbreak.

Run an OCLT. You will most likely fail it and then a SLAM is in order. You dont want to raise your stabilizer if you need to SLAM.

Slightly hazy water is an indicator for an algae outbreak. Do the test, go stock up on chlorine since you will most likely need to SLAM.

CYA tests are . And always round up. So your results were 70 and 60 as far as determining your proper FC level.
16 oz dry stabilizer Should raise your cya by 10 or so and may not quite have disbursed yet.
Next cya test try filling to 80 then glance at it, don’t stare. Then fill to 70, glance again. Continue as needed.
You can pour the test back in the mixing bottle, shake and redo the test several times and take an average also.
Plus 1 on OCLT
Can you see the swg making chlorine? Mine is clear so can see if it is doing anything.

Okay, thank you! I had added 32 oz of liquid chlorine about 15 minutes ago. I'll wait until after the sun goes down and do the OCLT. It is definitely possible that it is algae. My pool temp is 92 right now. I've got two chiller fountains running and just ordered a third, but it is a struggle to keep the temp down right now.

Thank you! I'll do that next time on the CYA test. Unfortunately, I can't tell if it is making chlorine or not. But this has been a problem all summer, so I'm tempted to call the tech to come check it.

You may or may not have a problem with the SWG. However, if you have an algae outbreak, which we suspect you do the SWG will not be able to keep up with the chlorine demand caused by the algae. Hold off a few days on the tech.

Do the test, and get ready to SLAM.

Okay, just did my last FC test for the evening and it is 3.4. When I retested CYA it is 80. So, looking at the chart I need to get FC to 31 to SLAM. I teach swimming lessons, and am guessing that I will need to cancel lessons to get this done. I imagine this will take a couple of days.

31 is the right FC. It has been posted on here many times that it is safe to swim up to SLAM level. Since this is a business, I think you just have to get it to SLAM level and get in yourself before you make the call to have other people in there or to cancel the lessons. Alternatively you can do an OCLT tonight to make sure you have to SLAM, but all signs are pointing to you needing to SLAM.

Okay - that is very good to know, thank you! Doing the OCLT tonight, so we'll see what happens in the morning! Thank you all for the advice!

The sooner you start the quicker it will be over. The key is to maintain the FC rate at 31. Also brush a lot. And make sure to brush hidden spots, behind lights, inside skimmers, etc.
