Changing default speeds on Calimar 3HP VSP

I am trying to help a friend that just got a new Calimar 3hp pump and interface board.

The pump is working great so far, but we are having an issue with the interface board. We have the three speeds connected to three aux relays on the RS8 board and we can easily switch between the default speeds that are pre-programmed into the interface board. But, the default speeds do not work the greatest for her pool setup and we are wanting to modify them and we cannot seem to figure out how to modify those speeds. According to the instructions, the pump needs to be stopped in order to customize the speeds. However, any time that we apply power to the pump, it turns on and starts pumping after just a few seconds. At that point, the Start/Stop button does not respond. I have even tried disconnecting all of the relays and then turning the power to the pump back on, but it again starts pumping after a few seconds. I can choose from the four speeds on the by pressing those buttons on the interface board, but the Start/Stop button still does not respond. I also noticed that the Modes Selection button does not respond to being pressed either.

So, I am just wondering if there is something that I am missing or if there is some other special way to set the speeds on this board. Or, is it possible that she received a defective board since the buttons do not respond to being pressed.

I have seen posts from others indicating that they have changed the default speeds, so I am fairly sure it can be done, so just wondering if anyone out there that has this pump setup can tell me what I am doing wrong.

Sounds like the pump has a bad keypad. I would make a warranty claim with the retailer.

Thank you very much for the reply! Bad keypad is what I am leaning towards as well, but since I have never used this pump, I was hoping really hoping that someone that has the pump can tell me if I a doing something else wrong before I try getting it replaced.

I have a Calimar 3hp VSP and cannot reproduce what you’re experiencing. When I remove power for more than 8 seconds, I get an error code, re-apply power, and can only clear the code by pressing the start button. Then can use the start button to start the pump.

When I remove power for less than 8 seconds, and re-apply power, the pump does not start on its own. It will only start when I press the start button.

There is a “prime speed” that you can set by holding the display button for more than 5 seconds, then pressing the up/down to change the speed. Once you start the pump to the prime speed, it reverts to the #1 speed setting in think after 2 or 3 minutes, even when in manual mode.

+1 for you having a bad keypad. Maybe there’s a stuck key keeping it from taking your input.

You're welcome... P.S. After setting the prime speed as above, press and hold the display button a couple seconds until the display toggles, and it comes out of prime setting mode. You should then be able to press the start button as per normal.

Basically you program 3 speeds and select the speeds from your pool automation’s scheduler. You will find the description here: My new Black&Decker VSP and DIY pool controller

It sounds to me like the 3 wires that you have going into IN1, IN2, and IN3 are incorrect. This would mean that when the pump gets power, it automatically starts bc one of the above have 5v from the 5v output.
Try removing the wires from in1, in2, and in3... then turn the power to the pump on. If it powers but doesnt start, then set the speeds for 1,2,3,4 program modes.... Then wire the 5v out from the pump interface to the all 3 of the relays (N.O. side). Then the wire from In1 goes to one, in2 goes to the second, and in3 goes to the 3rd.

Anytime the relay going to in1 is on, THAT SPEED WILL RUN REGARDLESS because it takes the highest priority even if all 3 relays are on at the same time. You can fix that with the automation.
