CH and heater relationship

Not really, as I understand from my reading here that is a holdover belief from old-school boiler systems. Unless you have a warranty that specifies a correct CH level then I wouldn't worry about it.
 
My local pool store recommends the CH level to be on the higher side in order to protect me heater. Any truth to this?

No. Heater corrosion is driven by pH. The function of calcium being involved with HX corrosion prevention is very misunderstood by the pool industry. You can safely forget about having calcium to protect your heat exchanger/heater.
