Can't clean heater vent

I have a Hayward H250FDN heater, and the top vent area has accumulated a fair amount of pine straw. Everything I can find says to just remove the cover and clean it out, but all the photos I see online have a clear cutout for the top cover to come off. Mine is all one piece and held on not only by a bunch of screws, but the plastic side pieces as well! I tried to take off the left piece, but it won't move far enough away from the screws on the side of the top piece without disconnecting the gas line. I suspect there will be a similar problem on the right side due to the water lines but didn't even bother trying. How the heck am I supposed to clean this so they don't burst into flames?!

As I mentioned in the original post, the side panel can't be moved more than a couple inches without disconnecting the gas line. And I think the other side as well, with the water lines, but doesn't matter if the gas side can't be removed anyway.
Have never removed that top, but on the Hayward I did, screws holding the plastic ends were inside cabinet at front and then had to remove back panel to get to those. Not fun.

I got to all the screws for the plastic side. But the gas pipe is in the middle of it and prevents it from moving out of the way to get to the other screws for the top, which are on the side behind the plastic.
