Can water too high for the skimmer do any damage?

I don't have that kind of flap door skimmer, but one of those coaxial things, consisting of a grid section and then a solid tube inside, which floats to about 1cm below the surface of the water. You know the kind, right? I realize that the skimming performance might be reduced or even eliminated, however, I do anticipate another problem where the floating tube floats high enough that it get jammed. As any of you familiar w/the technology are aware, the sections are disconnected by pulling the tub to the top of the assembly and twisting it through a maze of groves until they come apart. This won't usually happen by accident when the water is low, but if the floating tube is dragged up and the grid is dragged down by the suction, could they be jammed? What if I just remove the tube? Is there any danger there of anything except even less skimming?

You could abandon the cylindrical weir and replace it with an aftermarket weir door for the front of the skimmer. But the cylindrical versions should work just well when in working order. Maybe that one just needs to be replaced.

Only abandon it if it isn't working for you. How high is the water level (relative to the skimmer opening) when it jams? It should be about mid-height in the skimmer opening. Do you have an autofill? Why is the pool level getting too high?

AFAIK it's working fine. It's never jammed on its own while I've owned it. I'm just worried that's a hazard.
Right now, the water level is just below the opening, but last night it was above it. It's like that because of the deluge we had all day yesterday. I'd rather not spend chemicals or freshwater for that matter, pumping to waste. Evaporation is doing enough of that just fine.
What if I were to remove the floating portion? Is there any danger in that?

Removing the weir reduces the skimming capability and debris may not make it into the basket.

If it ain't broke......
