Can I remove my leaking multiport valve from my system completely?

Hi all,

I have a leak in my multiport value that's pressurizing the backwash line when in filter mode. Made due last year, and temperature changes seemed to make the leak go away. However, currently the leak is a significant drip when under high RPM and I want to fix it. Due to the placement of my equipment and various other reasons, I cannot backwash my filter. I keep the pool clean with cover and dolphin cc plus, so I only have to crack open and clean out the filter about 4 times a year. I literally never change the position of the valve from filter to anything else. I'm wondering if I even need a multiport valve.

Could I simply replace the valve with pvc into and out of the filter? If I did so, would I miss any capabilities that I might want but am unaware of?

Thanks!

Yes you can connect directly into your DE filter without the MPV.

If your filter ever gets clogged or pops a leak you lose the RECIRCULATE mode to keep water flowing with the filter bypasses.

You also lose the ability to drain to waste.

It sounds like you never had a major algae problem. If you do you might wish for some of the MPV settings.

John,

I have two rent house pools with old DE filters. I quit backwashing years ago and just open and clean the filters twice a year..

I removed both Multi Port Valves a couple of years ago and they work better... Less back pressure.

When the old DE filters finally die, they will be replaced by large cartridge filters.

I say go for it...

Thanks,

Jim R.

When you clean the filters, what is your process to break your vacuum? Do you simply twist the pressure gauge valve on top of the filter? Does doing so cause DE to travel in reverse back into your pool as things drain? Or is there no backflow?

I think cartridge filter might be in my future, too. The DE works terrific, but it’s a real pain to dispose of.

John,

I just open the filter drain plug and then I open the filter air vent valve.. Nothing drains back into the pool.

Obviously, half the old DE comes out the drain plug. This is not a problem for me, because of the equipment pad locations.. If, it were, I'd plumb in a drain pipe and manual valve to shut the drain port off when the filter was in use.

Thanks,

Jim R.
