Bugs and Earthworms in pool with cover on but filter running

Hi,

This is my second year closing my pool. I am in the northeast and am trying to close the pool as late as possible because I have a mesh safety cover. In order to prevent leaves from coming in, I have the pool running but put the safety cover on since the end of Oct. I run the vacuum running every few days to pick up any debris that may come through the mesh or under the cover. The first few weeks it was normal (mostly leaves), but today, I notice lots of bugs and even earthworm (I usually have them when I open). I did notice that the SWG is giving me an alert that it's too cold to run, but my chlorine level seems okay at around 5. Is this cause for concern or it's normal and I just keep running the vacuum and pool until it's time to close?

Thanks.

All of that is normal. Worms seek high ground in rain. A pool is "high ground" as most pool decks slope away from the pool, so worms are normal. Bugs seek shelter in dark places.

Keep the pump and vacuum going until you close...all good!

I guess I have to monitor the chlorine as the SWG is off.
Yes. Treat with liquid chlorine if necessary until you close. A sump pump in a bucket is a great way to allow you to pour chlorine in and circulate. The dolphin sigma also helps with circulation.

Thank you for the advice, I was going to ask the question about the dolphin, not just prior to fully winterizing the pool, but running it when the pool is winterize to pick up debris/bugs/etc during the winter so it's less work in the spring. My concern was if there are algae, it would stir it up. That said, the dolphin does have a nano filter, so it might help clean the water and circulate it if I add chlorine during the winter.

Mesh cover. I close late October and "soft open" March 15 (leave the mesh on, just peel back a corner to put the dolphin in. I start the pump, chlorinate and throw the dolphin in and run it daily. When I open April 15, the pool is spotless. I usually soft open with FC ~=2-2.5. I close with FC 1/2 way between normal and SLAM level and use polyquat 60. The dolphin makes it easy.

Thank you. During Oct and March 15, you do not put the dolphin in?
I don't. Just because I don't futz with pool during that time, except to lower water level and remove water from skimmers after rain/snow.

Is my Dolphin sensitive to hot or cold water?

Absolutely, the colder the water, the less efficient the Dolphin robot will be.
Water that is too warm and badly calibrated and your pool will contain algae that could clog the filters and limit the adherence of your Dolphin.
As stated in the warranty document, the robot should only be used in water temperatures 43°F - 95°F (6°C - 35°C). (below 15°C / 59°F climbing performance may be affected)
