Broken disperser on multivalve port; can I use sand filter with no disperser?

Hi guys, new here.

I have a Sta-Rite T-210WF sand filter with multiport valve. The bottom plastic part of the valve called the disperser broke off when I was opening the tank. I guess this happened because it is really old. I put everything back together and the filter is working fine without the disperser, but I don't know the long-term effects of leaving it this way. My big worry is that by not using a disperser I will get sand channeling, which would obviously be bad. I can't find a disperser and the old one is not useable. I can either get an entire new valve for about $150 or take my chances with no disperser. Has anyone ran a sand filter long-term without the disperser?
