Bought a home with a FROG pool - need help 🙃

It's counter-intuitive to think that more chlorine will make water feel like there's less chlorine, but it works because what we associate with chlorine is actually the byproducts of chlorine reacting with things. The smell, the eye stinging, the itchiness, etc are all from there being an excess of chloramines (a blanket term for chlorine byproducts) in the water because there's not enough chlorine to break them down quickly.
That reminds me of one of my favorite videos…

I wouldn't try to get a kit from the pool store. I did when I first started with TFP just because I wanted to get started right away. The kit I bought all the reagents were expired. It was the only one they had on the shelf and there's no telling how long it had been there.

No body goes into the pool store to buy a $100 kit when they can get the water tested for "free". And they certainly don't try to sell those kits to their customers. In fact they actively try to steer their customers away from it. So if you do find one in the store it's likely been there a long long time.

But everyone who gets it tested for 'free' spends $139. Crazy, isn't it. :laughblue:

Come back next week for your free test.

Quick question for anyone following this -

I backwashed my sand filter today for the first time since owning the pool. I’m 99% certain I followed all of the steps correctly, and I saw a difference in the water in the sight glass, and etc. However, the pressure never changed. Could the gauge be bad? It’s at 20 psi and it didn’t budge

Planning to get that pressure guage swapped out today. The test kit has been marked as shipped. The water is looking a lot better today. Very cloudy right now, but if it brightens up I'll go outside and grab some pictures.

For a starting point those #s are great seeing how you inherited somebody else's mess. My CYA was 360 when we moved to a puck/shock happy house.

How's the water looking today ? Got pics ?

It’s a rainy day today, so it’s hard to tell much. I think the sun is going to come out this evening and I’ll see if I can grab some pics. I should probably do a couple more tests over the next day or two before deciding first step, yeah?

With those numbers, there are no first steps...LOL

Those are great numbers. Your CYA is 70. Always round your CYA number up.

Do this test tonight, let's confirm you don't have algae...(even if you can't see it) Link-->Overnight Chlorine Loss Test
