Bought a foreclosure that included a 33,000 gallon, p.i.t.a., frog hatchery

Just saw something in another thread about blue streaks on plaster and one of the proposed causes was the presence of copper in a high chlorine environment. This made me wonder if some of my blue green issues are not a direct result of the 6 bottles of copper algaecide the pool store sold me on. I am pretty sure the copper is the reason for the staining on my steps and I wonder if it is causing some of my other headaches. I know for now to just keep on the slam, but is this something I should be concerned with also?

I am not an "expert" by any means but can share what I did (based on some research on this site and some words of wisdom from the previous owner). After the water cleared up a bit during my opening to get rid of metal-related stains (my water also looked like yours and more dark):
1. 1 Qt of Sparkle Conquest - basically eliminated all light brown stains
2. Scrubbed the steps with ascorbic acid
3. Some Natural Chemistry Extra Strength StainFree (I think this is basically the same as ascorbic acid)
4. ascorbic acid in a pair of stockings for rusted screws (underwater light)
5. trichlor tabs in a pair of stockings / mesh bag for non-metal, brown stains - I posted this here to get some help (but this stain seems to come back when my FC level is low)

Would love to see your sparkling pool soon!!

Maintaining FC well and cc is still at .5 probably less, one drop cleared it up but it was barely pink to begin with. Thinking about a new pressure gauge and some d.e., anybody have any experience with d.e. boost to a sand filter? I mean is it gonna take a day or two off of my clear up time or just a few hours? If it's going to potentially make a drastic improvement then it'll reinforce the wife's faith in me, but if I spend another 30 bucks and still need two more weeks to get it clear she's probably going to just push me in and buy some piranhas to hide the evidence.

I know this is "cheating" and I could be expelled from TFP for doing this, but at the end of my last SLAM, it was taking forever to get water crystal clear. So a few on here mentioned it, and I added some clarifier to the water. The next morning there was some big chunks of goop on pool bottom, and I vacuumed that up to waste. Water was crystal clear.

About adding DE: I did that as well, but my pressure was going to high way too quick, and had to backwash it. DE works well for me in maintenance mode.

Cellulose is news paper, and occasionally treated with chemicals for fire rating. (I Insulated houses for 8 years)Not so sure I would want to go that route. Tried the clairifier before I found TFP, didn't really work for me.

It looks like this SLAM was started 2 days ago. SLAMs usually last 2-3 weeks, maybe longer. It's too early to add anything to "cheat". Maybe once you have passed an OCLT and filtering isn't improving clarity any day to day. Then first thing at that point would be to check the filter, last resort would be to try other "things".

POP = Pool Owner Patience.

Nice. The return is clearer and the bottom step is more visible.

Reminder, brush at least once a day and don't backwash that filter until you get a 25% increase in PSI over the PSI post backwash :)

I'm maintaining FC well, I think yesterday I dropped 2ppm over the work day and it was quite sunny. Cc has been below .5 for a few days. Honestly the pool has been almost the same condition for almost a month and the pump has been running 24/7 since late may. I'm not necessarily looking to "cheat" I'm just seeking out options for better proformance. If there's a better way to go about clearing up the water and not do anything to negatively affect my pool, I'd like to try. I technically started the slam on Saturday night, but I was maintaining high chlorine levels long before then, just didn't have a good test kit to give me accurate numbers.

I went back and read through the whole thread. This stuck out:

however, my pressure gauge seems to only like the number 15 and 0

Sounds like your gauge is broken to me. If this is true there would be no way to know when to backwash?! You can get a cheap gauge at the pool store but the one at TFTestKits.net is much nicer for like $5 more dollars.

Yes, but that's pretty unscientific :) It would be better to get a new pressure gauge than to guess at what 25% reduced flow is. If PSI goes too high you are looking at more expensive problems than an $8 gauge!

I use DE in my sand filter and it does help a lot. However, since your pool is cloudy, it may work TOO well at the outset. That means that you should be home when you first do it as your filter could fill up very quickly and require Backwashing in a short time. Here are the directions if you go that route: Pool School - Add DE to a Sand Filter

I would avoid DE at this point. You've still got a lot of "large" particles in the water that the sand will work on just fine. DE at this point will increase your backwash frequency. Buy a new gauge! Look up how much a new filter costs- you want to avoid blowing yours up.
