In the last few days, we have encountered MANY bees around our pool. They seem to like the overflow drain cover and the pool floats. This is the first time in 11 years of pool ownership that we have had this problem. Any ideas on how to proceed?

Sounds like they are searching for water. Put a container of fresh water away from the pool. If you can determine the direction they are coming from, put it towards that area. Replenish it as necessary.

I wonder where they're coming from. Any chance to figure that out?

If they're in your walls you'd hear humming. . . That's how a friend found an active hive and bees in her house wall. Scary!
I wanted to add - We have hornets and wasps here. We even have a bug guy come out regularly. *sigh*

We have a stone block retaining wall around half of our pool/spa. Over the years wasps have gotten behind the wall through tiny gaps between the blocks. We used to go through many cans of wasp spray every summer. Last summer we installed a wasp trap on the pool fence. It caught a lot of wasps and really cut down on the wasps buzzing around the pool. This year we bought a second trap and mounted it on the fence on the opposite side from the first trap. They both catch a lot of wasps (and some bees). The number of wasps we see by the pool has not gone to zero (still find a few sneaking behind the block), but it is so much better than in past years.

FYI, we don't use the bait that comes with the traps, we use apple juice.

Here's a picture from the pool construction showing the retaining wall that had to be built.

Thanks Sollace. We went entirely with river rock inside the pool fence. We do ceramics and distribute them around the pool area. We are planning to put in some type of greenery all along the outside of the fence.

Here is a picture from this year.

To keep this on topic, you can see the 2 wasp traps we installed. One is mounted on the fence toward the left side of the picture. The other trap is mounted on the fence at the extreme right side of the picture.
