Just got back after 10 days to find what every pool owner hopes to never see: cloudy, green mess. There are several issues going on. First...the pump has developed a leak to where it's losing probably a couple inches (or more) per day--it's hard to say for sure because it's been raining yesterday and today. The neighbor watching the pool let the water level drop below the skimmer sometime on Saturday, so basically no circulation for about 72 hours. Amazingly, the pump didn't burn up and still works (with a leak, of course). Parts for the pump are in and should be repaired by tomorrow (hopefully). Second, ducks have decided to treat themselves to nightly swims in our pool (or more correctly, their 23,000 gallon toilet). As I began to clear up the water yesterday by shocking with 12.5% CL, I watched the CL go from 30 ppm to 0 overnight. Took it back up to shock level today and again...within hours back to 0. Finally I wised up and checked the cya and there was none. The last cya test I'd done was back in May when it had it at 60 ppm for the SWG. There's been significant water loss, but certainly not enough to lose 60 ppm. I just ran an amonia test (with a test kit from my aquarium) and it reads 0. To make a bad situation worse...take a look at these pictures (taken while it was raining earlier this evening):
Obviously something got into the water to make it foam like that.
I am making progress. I can see the drains in the deep end and the pool is starting to hold chlorine, but it's still fighting something. I lost 6 ppm in the last hour after the sun went down. We'll see how much is left in the morning.
Here's a quick summary:
-pump is leaking
-water lost all CL & cya
-ducks are pooping in pool
-water was cloudy and green; now clearing but still green with some kind of foam
-wife is pi55ed off
Other than that, everything's GREAT!
Here's my numbers:
FC 20 ppm
CC 1 ppm
ph 7.3
cya 0
alk 170
salt 3500
Any ideas? I need to get stabilizer back into the water, but where should my target be for cya and cl while I'm clearing this up? Did the non-priming pump contribute to any of this?
