Hello, I have a toilet float type auto pool filler. I recently installed a Flume water use detector in my house, and it shows a very small amount of water running (detected as a leak). When I adjust the pool filler float level to stop it from slowly filling, the Flume reads no water use. But only a couple (or even one) hour later, the auto fill is back to filling slowly and Flume reads it. So, my question is: in the northern CA summer, is it common for an auto fill to slowly, constantly, fill the pool (due to evaporation)? Is it possible I have a leak from in line going from auto fill to the pool (which is only a few feet).

First of all turn off your autofill and see how much the level of your pool drops.

Do the bucket test as described in…

I did the bucket test. There’s no indication of a leak. When I adjust the float level so there’s no water flow, it will go 6-8 hours without activating again. But, it seems once it’s slowly filling the pool again (due to evaporation) it doesn’t shut off. Just stays at a trickle. I have to adjust it to off again. I turned the water pressure up/down at the main water valve, but doesn’t seem to matter.
The float is new (with brass fitting) and the install was sealed with plumbers tape.

Is this just the way the float valve works? Always at a slow trickle? Doesn’t seem water efficient as at some point the pool is at its set level…and the valve should shut off.
Do the water levelers that hang over the side of the pool (attached to garden hose) work better?

You will find the autofill will just drip until you get enough water all at once, like rain, to fill the pool above the normal water level.

Hi, I have a toilet float type auto fill valve and would like to replace it with a fluidmaster type valve system. I know that the water intake should be on the bottom (instead of side), but couldn’t that be modified to work in the same float type cylinder? Just use couplings a pvc pipe to route it to the bottom? May have to cut the bottom stem of float when installing? Let me know if you you were able to do this. Thanks!
