Attached pool spa not draining...

I have a pool with an attached spa. When I've tried to drain the spa this year, the control panel shows it's draining, and the automatic lever goes from shutting off the spa drain to opening it. (I checked to make sure it stops when it's suppose to as well.) But the spa is not draining. Ideas?

mc,

Is the pump running?

In theory, the Intake valve should move to the spa position and the Return valve should move to the pool position. So, the pump sucks water from the spa drain and sends it to the pool returns..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Yes. I first put it in service mode, then I turn on the filter pump, then I push the V button three times until it says spa / drain. I know the return valve moves to the pool position. I will have to check the intake valve. I'm not sure if it's moving, but I'll check.

So sorry about above pics. I just went outside and put it in drain mode and this is how both handles turned. (I was told never to touch the Return line. I honestly didn't even know it moved!)

Mc

Ask yourself this.. If the pump is sucking water from the spa and sending it to the pool, why would the spa level not go down?

Either the pump is not on... Are you sure the pump is on???

Or one of the valves is not actually in the position it shows.

I suppose if you have a multiport valve it could be set to off or closed???

Thanks

Jim R.

I'm sure the pump turns back on when I push filter pump after putting in service mode. (It goes off when I push service and then back on after I push filter pump.) So I'm assuming the valves appear to be in the correct position to drain? That's why I'm so confused. It shows it's set to drain, but it doesn't. Your last comment about a multipart valve is over my head. In the picture of the Return valve, there is a valve to the top left of it. Is that valve set correctly?

Mc,

If this were my pool, I would remove the actuator from the Jandy valve and see what happens when I manually moved the valve.. I say this because in my mind it is impossible for the spa to not drain if the pump is connected to the spa drain and the return is sending water back to the pool.

One more thought.. Can you manually shut off your spa overflow? If you can, I would do that before trying to drain the spa.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hi Jim - Okay... I've had to replace my cell (on an old revision board) since we've last talked, so that was fun. Anyhow... I just off the Jandy actuator and here's what I got. The part to the top of the handle is crumbled, so I'm not sure if I can try to dig that out and reuse it somehow or if maybe just this part can be replaced. Thoughts?

Mc,

The whole part that should move the handle is gone.. Which now makex sense..

Here is link to rebuild kit.. Not sure it is the one you need, but you can see the part will fix what you have.

Buy the right kit and get it back running..

Your kit looks like the right one... :goodjob:

Thanks,

Jim R.

I ordered the one above that I posted. If it's not the right size, easy to return and I'll order what you posted. Thank you for all your help. You did tell me to look underneath because plastic could break! When I took it apart, I manually moved the diverter to the other side, screwed it back on and drained the spa to clean. Had to remove it and manually move it again, but at least I have a clean spa and will not have to go through it next time. Thanks again!
