Another Pool Build in Cypress, TX

Sorry I'm so long in replying. I've been trying to catch up on TFP. Just when I get a little caught up, I get behind again. I tell ya', life keeps getting in the way of my fun! Lol!!!! It's so great to hear from all of you - thanks a million!!!
Suz

Even more beautiful than I had imagined!
Btw, in GA and DC we call the purple bloom tree Wisteria. So sorry you lost the tulip tree. They are beautiful, but more so because of its meaning.

20x40 in-ground concrete "vintage" pool
Approx 38k gal
Concrete, plaster and epoxy paint
Sand filter
DIY plaster resurface repairs completed 6/2015.

Thank you Household! I've been reading about your SLAM or drain-out to clean up the pool. I hope it was successful. That is so great that the new tenants are willing to do TFP! They will be so glad they do - such a huge wonderful pool!

We have had Wisteria also, but they are a different plant from the Mountain Laurel tree. The Wisteria is a vine, but it can be trained to look like a tree. The Mountain Laurel cannot be trained to look like a vine - maybe a bush or a scrub tree since they grow so slowly. You're right in that the flowers look very similar. Wisteria has a softer scent like hyacinth or freesia. The fragrance of the Mountain Laurel is much like grape-koolaid and it is a powerful fragrance when close to it.

You'll just have to come visit when it's blooming!!!

Looks great Suz. A credit to your planning and execution.

Thanks!!! The credit I'll take is that I listened as best I could to TFP, including you! If I could go back, I'd do like many of those who start following the builds months before they even find a builder - so smart!!!

Wonderful! And welcome back :)

Thank you! Good to see you are still popping in! How are the big skies??? I think of you whenever I hear something about pilots. Being a pilot must have it's fun side! I hope!!!! We need an update on your beautiful pool, applebe!!!

SUZ!!!!!!!!!! WOW. I mean seriously WOWOWOWOW I love all the landscaping. It is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhhh, thanks, Wendy! I saw a picture on Pinterest the other day - it so reminded me of your pool. I envy your lot size and the woodsy area - like your own getaway, but you get to live there!!!! How cool is that?!!!!

Wow! I love your landscape. The areas along your walls and deck are so nice. We are doing deck all the way up to our walls because we need the deck space, but I wish we had more room.

- - - Updated - - -

The Chinese fringe and Mount laurel trees just might be going in ours. :)

I see you have a 1hp 2 speed for your water features. Is the 2 speed not enough to turn it low enough for you? Someone in a post I made on water features pumps said you can add some valves to help reduce flow.

Thanks, firehunter! Originally, I wasn't going to have any landscaping. But my sons grew up in this house (we moved in in 1989), so they immediately vetoed that idea which surprised me. I wanted more pool, not so much decking. But they were used to their mom gardening a lot with tons of plants. They said it wouldn't seem like home without the plants. But don't worry, IMO, you won't regret having more pool and deck space - that's where the fun times are!!!

I don't think you'd be disappointed in the Chinese Fringe or the Mountain Laurel trees. Just know that the Mountain Laurel grows very slowly (I think about 1 inch a year). I don't know much about the Chinese Fringe, but I've watched one growing over the years on the esplanade on Cypresswood. It seems to grow somewhat slowly also. Neither will get too large - at least not in MY lifetime! Lol!!!!

I'm very happy with the 2 speed pumps, but there are times I wish I could turn them down lower than my pumps' low speed. I'm glad you brought up the option of adding valves - I'll have to check into that!

And, have you mastered all the Chemistry Suz? I figured you have, but just curious how that was going. Pool looks like it!

Looks FABULOUS back there all around BTW. JUST AWESOME.

Noooooooooo, Patrick!!! I'm far from having mastered the water chemistry. OMG, not even close. I enjoy it and do fine when the chems all behave themselves - perfectly. Where I get boggled is re the manipulating those chems that have big affects on others. Like..... to get pH to settle down, the TA must be such and such. But if pH is too low, then blah, blah, blah. I'm curious to try borax, but I probably need to get better first with the chems I'm using. I'm still researching that and how to tweak things. And once in a while (I'm whispering in a high, squeaky voice), I read some conflicting opinions, and then I get confused. No complaints at all - it will help me become more knowledgeable.

Thanks for the compliments! I'd love to see a thread of recent pool updates from all the guides, mods, etc!

Suz
What a beauty your yard has become!! No more traces of dirt or construction. It all looks like it's been in place for years- nice and established and GORGEOUS!!!
Thanks for a few peeks at your private resort! I periodically peek back at your build to look at your tile ;)

You are so sweet, Denise!!! Thank you! I hear the longing in your post for your build to be totally finished with the back finally cleaned and tidy!!!! If it isn't already, it will be soon enough!!! It will all be worth your gorgeous pool!!

Suz, have you had to clean your filter yet? Was it difficult? How do you like your Jandy equipment?

I'm so slow in replies, you're probably way beyond these questions. I'll answer anyway just in case. So far, so good with the Jandy equipment. But honestly, I wouldn't know the difference, since I've never owned a pool - or had a relative or close friend with pools. And no..... I haven't cleaned the filter yet. (shhhhhhhhh, don't tell anyone on TFP - ha ha). I'm a little intimidated by it, and heard it's a very wet process. I thought I'd wait for warmer weather. Now that we've had these floods, I'll probably go ahead and tackle my first filter clean as soon as this weather system moves out.

Have you cleaned yours since you posted here? Let me know if you have. Shame on me for not having done it yet. I wasn't a perfect parent, so I probably won't be a perfect pool owner, either!!!

Hey Paris! It's great to hear from you. Sorry, I can't answer your question. I wouldn't know a multi-port valve from any other. I have a cartridge filter, so I don't think we backwash like when you have a sand or DE filter. I am going to text Mark tomorrow morning and ask how I can drain some of the pool water in case we get a lot more rain this week. The water is up to the very bottom of the overflow drain.

Do you have a DE filter?

I'd love to see some updated photos of your pool!!! I've been thinking about you and wondering how the landscaping went, etc.

If this helps, here's a post build picture of our equipment pad.

We are well here - just waiting for the water to warm up for swimming! I hope you guys are well! Any swimming there yet?
Take care!
Suz

Hi I'm just checking out your pad... It's all Jandy? Our pool builder is going to paint all the pipes an off black/grey color to match the equipment. Not sure if your builder offered, but I think it will look nice all matching.

Gustafsa - Yes, I believe it is all Jandy. I don't have my best reading glasses on ( pretending those are eye glasses ), so I can't tell for sure in the picture. To the best of my recollection, it is all Jandy. I'll let you know if I find out otherwise.

No, my builder didn't offer to paint the pipes. I wouldn't have managed another color choice decision!!! :laughblue: I think it looks awesome on the pool builds I've seen with the paint job - go for it!!!

Take care,
Suz

Hey Suz! I will clean your filter for a plane ticket to come visit you! hehe!

Kim :cat:

You don't know how tempted I am to take you up on that!!!! Remember how my back yard looked about this time last year? Well, that's how the inside of my house looks this year!! It is totally torn up. I found a contractor I really like. First had him re-tile my shower since it was leaking into my closet. Loved what he did there, so now he's remodeling Nick's entire bathroom upstairs. After 27 years and two messy boys/teenagers/adults, it was a disaster. It looks great and should be finished in a few days. I like the contractor so much, he's next going to start painting several rooms and hallways, change out many ceiling recessed lights to LED with dimmers (I've never had dimmers - so excited), replace sink faucets in the kitchen and bathrooms, and whatever else I can rope him into doing!!! My poor house which I dearly love is finally getting some well-deserved sprucing up!! Let me get all this work done, then I will ship you in!!! Hopefully by then, I won't need to put you to work - we'll just have a lot of fun and drive around visiting the nearby TFP friends!!!

Oh so glad you are ok. Cypress got the brunt of it. CNN has been showing rescues all day. Supposed to get more rain, so hopefully areas have drained a bit today.

Can you pass along your landscaper's contact info?

I'm not sure where you are in the Houston area (or I forgot). I'm near Cypress Creek. It was to crest this afternoon or evening. Cypress Creek is a mess when it floods. This time around, it's been worse than I've seen in my 38 years of living in Cypress. It may take a few days. Many neighborhoods that were clear yesterday flooded today from the backup from the creek through the storm drains. That's just awful - you think you escaped the worst of it, and then it comes back to haunt you with the sun shining above you. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that a backup of creek water doesn't happen to our neighborhood.

I'll send you a PM with the landscaper's info. I would use him again.

Suz, no I haven't. I'll have to check he gauge but I don't think I should have to clean it yet. How do you like Rosie? I am getting the same one.

I consider Rosie a part of the family!!! Lol!!!! But I don't have to bribe her to do any chores. I just drop her in the water and plug her in! No complaining from her either - she happily gets started right away. Seriously, this robot does a fantastic job!!! I changed my mind at the last minute - the day before the builder was bringing out the Polaris. Patrick told me which one he had, so that's what I got. It comes with 2 sets of filters. One set for leaves and such, and another corrugated type for finer debris. Mostly I use the corrugated type. It picks up the finest of dirt which looks like very smooth chocolate pudding when we pull Rosie out. That filter also easily picks up all the various sized leaves we get - mostly from neighbor's trees. Even before my new hip, I had no trouble putting her into the pool - she's not as heavy as I expected. Nick still gets her out of the pool for me, but I plan to take that part over soon. Last week, Nick taught me how to use the remote to maneuver her up the steps. She makes it all the way up to the second step from the top, then Nick lifts her out. Bending over that much and lifting up Rosie is too hard just because I'm still building muscle on my new hip side. But I'll get there soon enough. You'll love having a Rosie! What will it's name be?

Take care!
Suz

Suz! Such a blessing to find someone that does good work! How did you find him? Is he starting to feel like a part of the family as well? I bet you feed him and keep him in drink as well! He is loving life right now!

You know what? I bet he could figure out how to do the filter just by watching a video or two. He could do it the first time for you OR watch you do it giving pointers.

Hi Suz, just checking in. I'm hoping you're still high and dry.
I was down in your area yesterday, checking on the old neighborhood. Our friends are ok, but the back of our old subdivision is flooded, which has never happened before ( not even with Allison in 2001).
I also saw that Grant Rd is flooded just west of Jones, even before you get to the creek. It seems like you might be boxed in a bit, do you know if Eldridge is clear?
Be safe, and If there's anything you need, let me know.

Thank you so very much, Mamiamjo! About your old neighborhood - it is really amazing how so many places have flooded (in our area) that didn't flood with Allison. Cypresswood (between Lakewood Forest and 249) has never been under for such a long stretch. Usually, it's just at the creek. Was it really all due to the rains or from added building in the area since 2001. I guess a combination of both. I saw on a Harris County flood map that Cypress Creek by us had 15 inches of rain. I know we had more like 19-20" with Allison.

We are high and dry, but as you said, we are boxed in a bit. We could get to 249 via Louetta, but yesterday the traffic was so heavy I was concerned about running out of gas. As you know, that's a short stretch. I turned around and came home after about 40 minutes. For some reason, I thought once I made it to 249, I would be able to hop onto 249. Duh...... when I turned right, there were THREE lanes of nearly stopped traffic trying to get on the entrance ramp. I made a quick decision and turned right into University Park/ old HP campus and made it home. I heard last night that the old HP campus is now under. Luckily we're mostly home bodies anyway, so it's not bad staying home. I heard Eldridge is open, but once you get much beyond, then there's more high water. We had another round of heavy rain this morning, but it only lasted about 40 minutes. Even though it was a continuous downpour, I really didn't see much rise in the pool water. At this time, I think our only concern is water rising from the storm drainage system. That's what is now getting numerous neighborhoods. I'm keeping my eye on the street and keeping my fingers crossed.

A friend just sent this picture to me. She says the caption (not shown here) read, 'Man sitting by his pool in Longwood'. That's a neighborhood up the road from us. To his left, you can just see a raised beam or column of his pool. I guess it's a legit photo..... If it's for real, it's funny and tragic at the same time. This guy obviously has a great sense of humor. Gotta love his spirit, right?!

A diehard TFP-er????

Oh wow! that is crazy! It is so scary how areas that have never flooded are flooding. My brother lives over by you - Cypress N Houston/Jones/N Eldridge area - their house is higher than most and didn't flood - it is in a 1000 yr flood plain - all the other houses are in a 500 yr flood plain - many are flooded. They have huge trucks and are able to get in and out - but you have to go sooo slow because your wake pushes water into homes :(

Makes me worry about my home in 10 more years

Geez Wendy, your brother is very close to us. We're the neighborhood (coming from your brother's) on the other side of Grant - at Grant and N Eldridge. Is he back there by El Gallo's there at Cypress N Houston and Jones? I'm so glad that he's not flooded! And you're so right about the wakes from the big trucks causing more damage. It happens a lot! Some just aren't thinking, and some don't care - sadly.

I know what you mean - wondering about 10 years from now. At the time we built our house in 1989, we weren't even considered in a flood plain. I have no idea about now. After heavy rains in 1991, we decided to get flood insurance 'just in case'. I'm so glad we did.

Are you still dry at your house?
Suz

That is close!!! They live on the corner of Oak Plaza and Big Leaf Dr. (connecting road to 2 different subdivisions) I can't remember the name of their subdivision - It might be Tower Oaks or Bending Oaks - something like that.

They have a pool as well - high and dry still!

We are still good - a little worried about the water being released by the dam in Lake Conroe - it will be coming through our area (not super close to us - but heck - we shouldn't have had water from the rain - so who knows). The water is still in people's yards but not up to the homes. Ready for some sun to dry it up! We got flood insurance too - just because it was cheap enough and I would kick myself if something happened and I didn't.

Glad to hear everyone is still safe. I got a laugh with the photo you shared Suz, that guy was going to enjoy his back yard no matter what lol. That subdivision (Longwood) is near my Mom's subdivision, although she is dry and safe and doesn't have any flooding.
I'm also glad to hear your brother is safe Wendy. He lives close to where we used to live also (Grant & Jones). Heck I was just doing some shopping at the Kroger at Jones / Cypress North Houston on Saturday.
It looks like most of the rain has passed for today, although the news predicts another 70% chance for tomorrow.
Stay Safe & Dry Everybody!

I'm so behind! I had over 100 Tapatalk notifications. [emoji15]

My PB lives in Longwood. Their house was okay but they were boxed in on the streets. We're high and dry in Fairfield but I think the cause of a lot of this is so much development. We have so much concrete and not enough permeable ground. The water just has nowhere to go.

We don't have flood insurance and even with this still didn't need it but we're going to get it. With the Grand Parkway going up behind us and all the development likely to start there, we'll end up boxed in by concrete before too many years also. Have you guys seen the drone videos of the area? Crazy.

Glad you guys all seem to be dry! This picture is verified to be real and was at the Jack in the Box in Cypress off 290.

I think it's finally starting to recede now. We had a whole week off school and 53 schools had damage of some form. All set to resume in Monday.

They think but can't verify that a tornado actually did touch down and hit Klein Collins HS based on the damage. Klein ISD Maintenance repairing storm damage to Klein Collins High School - News - Houston Community Newspapers

This has been crazy! So glad everyone is doing okay. Our neighborhood groups have been blowing up with people asking for help with their flooded pools. I was so proud I wasn't the only one suggesting TFP!
