Sorry I'm so long in replying. I've been trying to catch up on TFP. Just when I get a little caught up, I get behind again. I tell ya', life keeps getting in the way of my fun! Lol!!!! It's so great to hear from all of you - thanks a million!!!
Suz
Thank you Household! I've been reading about your SLAM or drain-out to clean up the pool. I hope it was successful. That is so great that the new tenants are willing to do TFP! They will be so glad they do - such a huge wonderful pool!
We have had Wisteria also, but they are a different plant from the Mountain Laurel tree. The Wisteria is a vine, but it can be trained to look like a tree. The Mountain Laurel cannot be trained to look like a vine - maybe a bush or a scrub tree since they grow so slowly. You're right in that the flowers look very similar. Wisteria has a softer scent like hyacinth or freesia. The fragrance of the Mountain Laurel is much like grape-koolaid and it is a powerful fragrance when close to it.
You'll just have to come visit when it's blooming!!!
Thanks!!! The credit I'll take is that I listened as best I could to TFP, including you! If I could go back, I'd do like many of those who start following the builds months before they even find a builder - so smart!!!
Thank you! Good to see you are still popping in! How are the big skies??? I think of you whenever I hear something about pilots. Being a pilot must have it's fun side! I hope!!!! We need an update on your beautiful pool, applebe!!!
Ahhhh, thanks, Wendy! I saw a picture on Pinterest the other day - it so reminded me of your pool. I envy your lot size and the woodsy area - like your own getaway, but you get to live there!!!! How cool is that?!!!!
Thanks, firehunter! Originally, I wasn't going to have any landscaping. But my sons grew up in this house (we moved in in 1989), so they immediately vetoed that idea which surprised me. I wanted more pool, not so much decking. But they were used to their mom gardening a lot with tons of plants. They said it wouldn't seem like home without the plants. But don't worry, IMO, you won't regret having more pool and deck space - that's where the fun times are!!!
I don't think you'd be disappointed in the Chinese Fringe or the Mountain Laurel trees. Just know that the Mountain Laurel grows very slowly (I think about 1 inch a year). I don't know much about the Chinese Fringe, but I've watched one growing over the years on the esplanade on Cypresswood. It seems to grow somewhat slowly also. Neither will get too large - at least not in MY lifetime! Lol!!!!
I'm very happy with the 2 speed pumps, but there are times I wish I could turn them down lower than my pumps' low speed. I'm glad you brought up the option of adding valves - I'll have to check into that!
Noooooooooo, Patrick!!! I'm far from having mastered the water chemistry. OMG, not even close. I enjoy it and do fine when the chems all behave themselves - perfectly. Where I get boggled is re the manipulating those chems that have big affects on others. Like..... to get pH to settle down, the TA must be such and such. But if pH is too low, then blah, blah, blah. I'm curious to try borax, but I probably need to get better first with the chems I'm using. I'm still researching that and how to tweak things. And once in a while (I'm whispering in a high, squeaky voice), I read some conflicting opinions, and then I get confused. No complaints at all - it will help me become more knowledgeable.
Thanks for the compliments! I'd love to see a thread of recent pool updates from all the guides, mods, etc!
You are so sweet, Denise!!! Thank you! I hear the longing in your post for your build to be totally finished with the back finally cleaned and tidy!!!! If it isn't already, it will be soon enough!!! It will all be worth your gorgeous pool!!
I'm so slow in replies, you're probably way beyond these questions. I'll answer anyway just in case. So far, so good with the Jandy equipment. But honestly, I wouldn't know the difference, since I've never owned a pool - or had a relative or close friend with pools. And no..... I haven't cleaned the filter yet. (shhhhhhhhh, don't tell anyone on TFP - ha ha). I'm a little intimidated by it, and heard it's a very wet process. I thought I'd wait for warmer weather. Now that we've had these floods, I'll probably go ahead and tackle my first filter clean as soon as this weather system moves out.
Have you cleaned yours since you posted here? Let me know if you have. Shame on me for not having done it yet. I wasn't a perfect parent, so I probably won't be a perfect pool owner, either!!!

Even more beautiful than I had imagined!
Btw, in GA and DC we call the purple bloom tree Wisteria. So sorry you lost the tulip tree. They are beautiful, but more so because of its meaning.
20x40 in-ground concrete "vintage" pool
Approx 38k gal
Concrete, plaster and epoxy paint
Sand filter
DIY plaster resurface repairs completed 6/2015.

Looks great Suz. A credit to your planning and execution.

Wonderful! And welcome back![]()

SUZ!!!!!!!!!! WOW. I mean seriously WOWOWOWOW I love all the landscaping. It is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! I love your landscape. The areas along your walls and deck are so nice. We are doing deck all the way up to our walls because we need the deck space, but I wish we had more room.

The Chinese fringe and Mount laurel trees just might be going in ours.
I see you have a 1hp 2 speed for your water features. Is the 2 speed not enough to turn it low enough for you? Someone in a post I made on water features pumps said you can add some valves to help reduce flow.

And, have you mastered all the Chemistry Suz? I figured you have, but just curious how that was going. Pool looks like it!
Looks FABULOUS back there all around BTW. JUST AWESOME.

What a beauty your yard has become!! No more traces of dirt or construction. It all looks like it's been in place for years- nice and established and GORGEOUS!!!
Thanks for a few peeks at your private resort! I periodically peek back at your build to look at your tile![]()

Suz, have you had to clean your filter yet? Was it difficult? How do you like your Jandy equipment?
