Another Pool Build in Cypress, TX

I wonder how you train a dog to recognize a low blood sugar or a seizure? Both boys are handsome -- does Willie get along with his feline aunts/uncles?

Helen you cannot really "train" a low blood sugar or seizure dog. You have to find one that has it in them. They do it by smell is what I have been told.

Suz that is awesome that Willie is able to help Matt like that. I am sure Matt has seen WAY too much for any one person to deal with. Give him a BIG HUG for me please!

Make sure you thank your son for us for his service to our country! I really appreciate all he has done to protect our freedom! Tomorrow is 9/11-no need to say more.

Thank you, Marla. I will tell him. Tomorrow will be a day of reflection.

He liked the star. I asked why he didn't say more about it. He said he knew I would have one somewhere, since I had several smaller ones in our previous flagstone patio. Let's just say, there would have been a lot more talk if I hadn't included a Texas star!

Almost the entire pool was a surprise for him. Early on, he told me not to send any more pictures. I'm so happy he loves it!

Hi Suz!
So glad your son made it, and for such a long visit!

What more could you ask for than children to want to stay home and frolic in the pool?! Music to the ears!

I saw something re the Mosquitos bugging you. My son and I have horrible reactions to mosquito bites. Swelling - to 1/2 dollar size, and he can't seem to stop scratching so they turn into scars. :( The single best thing we have done is to have our yard sprayed. Runs us about $70 every 3 weeks. And definitely worth it. I can't say we never get bit if out at dusk in the yard, but it GREATLY reduces the number. And we can at least walk to the car without being bit. Might want to consider it.

Saw the night picture and it is AMAZING!

It's been so much fun watching your pool take form, and hearing all the details.

Blessings!
Kim

I ordered them from Amazon, and it looks like they now have the same for less. I do like them. They are a nice weight, but mine don't fit perfectly. But the base color for my skimmer matches the decorative skimmer, so it doesn't show. It's a tad too small, so it slips around a little. I'm the only one who would know that, and so far it hasn't caused any issues.

Make sure you measure yours first.

Even though it's not a perfect fit, I still like it better than what came with my PB skimmer set.

Glad you asked about it!
Take care,
Suz.

I just double checked. It looks like it's the darker color that is a little less. I don't know what color you need.

I've been out of the loop for a while working and traveling to see kiddos and just getting caught up on the threads. I love this Suz! I am probably going to order today! (More cardboard for hubby to breakdown and discard). I love Amazon. Thanks for posting. It is so nice to get ideas from others. I've also ordered that huge syringe you shared a while back for testing the water. We love it!

I tested everything I could today. I'm still a little confused as to what my volume is. As long as I don't overshoot on the chemicals, I'm more curious about the gallons.

But here are my numbers in the photo - decided that was easier than typing it all out, and anyone who's interested can see my previous numbers, targets, and amounts added.

So, I tried using the bottom of Pool Math for the effects of adding such and such to figure the gallons. Using the CH, I started with 200 because that was the level I got the week before this sheet. Up until now, it has seemed like 24K worked with my numbers of added chemicals. Since about a week, the CH went up to 275. So I changed the gallons until the increase was 75 (I got 74, but decided that was close enough). If I used Monday's level of 175, that would mean my gallons are about 13K. That really surprises me with the last 4 weeks of adding bleach and correcting pH. But it could be tester error!

So now I will do the longer test to calculate gallons using pH.

It's not urgent, but if anyone sees anything wrong with my numbers, let me know. I still want to raise the CYA and the CH, so for today, I used 17,500 gallons to calculate amounts to add. Even if this gallon amount is low, I'd rather be conservative since it's CYA and CH. Maybe I should use 13K, but I really don't think that's the case. I hope! Or I'm going to be praying for a Tropical storm!!!

Thanks,
Suz (if this doesn't make sense, it's because I'm still too new at this business....)

Suz - where did you get this spreadsheet? I need one just like this.

Suz - where did you get this spreadsheet? I need one just like this.

I found it on TFP by searching, so you might want to check for others, too. I liked this one. As I used it, I changed the format a little and added columns to fit my needs. I never found a printable version, so I took a picture and printed it. Then I had to start over with a new excel sheet to make my changes. I found being a novice at all this, I wanted records of what I set as goals and the Pool Math recommended amounts to add. Especially with CH and CYA, I usually add a little less than the recommended amount since it's more difficult to lower these levels. I can always add more. I wanted a record of what I did differently than the Pool Math suggested.

So.... do the same for what you need - change it up to fit!

Keeping a log of all my test results

I tried to attach my excel file, but no luck. Maybe someone knows how to do that.....

Let me know if you have any questions!
Take care,
Suz.

Awwww, Wendy and Kim... I was just thinking the same thing yesterday. How different it feels with TFP and a little sad. It's like all new people, and I can't seem to keep up.

And now I'm really, really sad, so opening the old thread to see your posts is perfect timing. New chapters to begin and knowing they may be different but may possibly be even sweeter.

My son, Matt, and his dog Willie just drove away headed back to Oregon. We had the most amazing 10 day visit. And the pool was the backdrop for almost everything we did. Both sons and I agreed, we've never had more fun or felt closer. When the pool felt chilly, we fired up the heat in the spa and went back and forth between pool and spa.

The house is deafening with silence, and I'm teary (well, teary may be an understatement). But they're mostly tears of joy and gratitude with a little sadness that it could be a year before we're together again.

I know tomorrow Nick and I will start settling back into our familiar routines which we also enjoy.

And maybe I can get back into a routine of reading and posting on TFP with old and new friends.

Thanks, Wendy and Kim! Your timing couldn't have been better.
Hugs,
Suz.

Suz, at least you have one son still around. I also have one that lives about a mile from my house but the other lives in San Diego. I understand the sadness you feel now that he has left. But maybe he'll be back sooner to visit the pool!

And I miss y'all's build updates!

SUZ!!!!!!!I FINALLY finished your thread! Today! At work on my lunch break!I (like everyone else) LOVE LOVE LOVE your pool!!There were SO many times I wished I had been involved in watching the build as it was actually happening. I was actually sad I couldn't reply when you were asking for opinions and remarking about all the mess and rain. Although you don't know me, I feel like I know you. I'm so happy for you! You have an amazing retreat and I pray you are blessed with many many years to enjoy it. I hope you don't mind, but I may use your color combo on my yet to be started build. It won't be as pretty as your design. Alas, my yard can only do a narrow rectangle. And, I'm not sure we can afford the travertine, but I am seriously looking at the waterline, spa and accent tiles. They are just gorgeous!I've enjoyed your story and sad that, like a great book or really wonderful movie, it's over and I'm wishing there was more. Blessings to you!Denise

Denise, thank you so much for posting! It was fun to pop in and see the old thread. I admire your determination to read through it; I don't think I would! And thank you for the lovely comments.

One of these days, I will do some real updates. I never did finish the 'glamour shots' for LightStreams. I don't mind taking photos, but I can't seem to get the pool area cleared of everything (the pool toys, towels, etc) at one time. If I ever get around to doing that, I'll definitely post those photos.

My current goal is to figure out how I'm going to keep using the pool for therapy with the water temperature going down. (without sending all my money to the gas company!) I love cold weather, but a little less so now that we have a pool. I've held off on the water exercises since they seemed to be making things worse. But I found a good doctor (neurologist) who seems to have a better idea what's going on with my hip than the orthopedic guy I saw 18 months ago. He wants me to go up to Kingwood to a water therapy center for some sessions so they can show me what will help me the most without causing more damage. Then it's on to a hip surgeon. Hopefully that will get me mobile again. Other issues could get in the way, but I'm going to hope for the best.

I do have a few pictures to post. They aren't great, but I do like the night shots I took while I was in the spa. What I'm really looking forward to is taking close-ups of the landscaping in the spring when the plants have grown and filled in a bit more. Out of all the plants put in on July 23rd, only one died. I think that's pretty good considering the heat and brief dry spell during that time. But spring will be fun - that's when I plan to add more plants. Last week, I finally had the front yard beds cleaned, trimmed, and mulched. It was way overdue. This coming week, we plan to put in a few annuals. I think we'll stick with our usual favorites - pansies, snapdragons, dianthus, and some alyssum. I'll do the paying, and Nick will do the planting. I miss planting, but at least he's here to carry on for me.

Thanks again, Denise, for the encouragement to do an update.

My best to all,
Suz.

Oh Suz! The first picture just took my breath away! THAT TILE!! Really gorgeous shots!

Have you tried chiropractic? It totally fixed my back and my knee. When I get out of alignment from turning patients, I get adjusted and I'm all better. It took almost a year to get there because I was pretty messed up. I'd come home from work and just cry. Getting up in the morning was torture. Getting up from a sitting position and walking was very difficult. It would take me a bit to "get going". I don't have those problems any more.
Of course, I don't know your whole situation. I pray you get the help and answers you need.

Your garden and yard sound heavenly! The only time my thumb is green is when I dye Easter eggs!
