Another Pool Build in Cypress, TX

Hi Suz!
Coming to take a look and see how things are coming along for you. I know all the rain has to have you discouraged, but really it does appear to be coming along!
As for the overflow thing, I don't THINK our pool even has one (but nor do we have a main drain, or a functioning one at least). So worst case scenario, you can live without it.

When I would add water to our pool and forget the hose was on, it just flows over the shallow end, across our concrete patio, and into our grass, (then we get the water bill and I kick myself).

Thanks, Kim! That's good to know. Well, not that you kick yourself, but that I'll get along without one if I must. And if I don't get it fixed, I'll have to set a timer or something - I couldn't kick myself if I tried!!!! :laughblue: Good to hear from you! I'm glad you still come around once in a while. I saw your post from today on your thread. Hang tough!!

Yes, I was joking! Have taken note of your Shell Beach (Beach Shell?) tiles tho.

Oh good! There for a bit I was worried you thought I might be a serious advisor for pebble colors!!! The one thing I AM sure of are the Shell Beach tiles from LightStreams. I love our Peacock glass tiles, but the Shell Beach make my heart go pitter-pat! I've said this before. I wish I had ordered half the Peacock tile I ordered and wish I'd ordered twice the Shell Beach. Each and every piece is so unique and exquisite! They were a last minute decision, so I got only enough to trim the sun shelf.

In case anyone is wondering, here is a photo showing the concrete forms and pour for the travertine deck borders. They used rebar in the 'walls' of concrete. I'm not sure what the accepted method is for installing a travertine deck, so I hope this is ok. It looks good to me, but what do I know?!!!

The same day the paver guys poured the concrete borders, the travertine was delivered!!! That was exciting! I thought I had a lot delivered until I read the recent post of the guy getting 30-some odd crates of pavers, etc. Geez!

Martin Kennedy: Wherever you are..... How many crates of travertine, pavers, stone, etc did YOU have delivered??!!! I can't even imagine!!! LOL!

Take care everyone and Happy 4th of July!!! Suz.

Yesterday, the crushed granite was delivered. The pavers used it for the base to lay the travertine. It was a huge truck, so he must have had another delivery before mine. This is when I wished my boys were still little - they would have loved all this fun stuff with machines and trucks!! I guess the crew knew the dump truck driver, because they all were having a great time. (hope they weren't making fun of the Klingon warship in my backyard!!!)

And here's the big pile of crushed granite. I know you were dying to see this one, but I'm using this as my record of the build. I did tell the guys to watch out for our outside kitty - don't let him near that pile of kitty litter. I don't think my warning quite translated!

Two more photos, and that should finally catch me up on our pool.

This one is just an overview of the pool with the crushed granite base for the travertine on Monday. It's so fun to be able to look through and see the pool area from the car as we pull up in the driveway. Since April 14th, the big dirt pile has kept it hidden.

This next one is similar, but to the right you can see the ribbon of concrete that will be the outside edge of the deck. Travertine will be mortared on top of the concrete ribbon to make sure the inside pieces of travertine can't slip and slide out into the flower beds or whatever.

Now, I also have a question about this photo. In the foreground, hopefully you can see a short ridge going left to right. (it may look more like a shadow) It follows the imaginary line of our breezeway walk. Because of the height of the pool and the difference in the height of the driveway (behind me in this photo), the paver guys want to put a low rise step along there. But I don't want a step there. It would mean each time we walk out the back door to go to the pool area, we will have to make a little step up. Not that that would be difficult, but I see a lot of tripping or falls from that little step by some person not watching where they are stepping (namely Suz.). If there has to be a step up, I'd rather it be between the driveway and that side of where the breezeway walk meets. (behind me in the photo) At least that is at the fence line and only used at the gate. I hope this makes sense. Unless you guys have other ideas, I'm going to tell them not to do the step as it is in the photo. I'm not sure why they can't just slope it down to the driveway height. They told me the breezeway section would drain towards the driveway anyway. Thanks for your thoughts on this!
Suz.

Your pool looks great. Im not sure I understand the step. I'm sure it has something to do with drainage and keeping water out of the pool or your house. But I wouldn't like a step either. Hopefully, you can figure out a better way.

Marla and Janny: Thanks for your input. Yes, that is the driveway in the lower left.

If they were to continue the same grade going from the pool to the driveway, it would be higher than the level of the driveway creating a 4-6" step at the driveway.

I think they should be able to gradually slope it down to meet the same level as the driveway. It should work out. I appreciate hearing ya'll's thoughts. Sometimes I can miss the obvious!

This pool is going to be up there as one of my favorites.

Good morning from a very rainy Brighton today! I'm loving your crushed granite base, it not only covers up all that rotten mud, but also gives a great idea of how the finished decking area will end up. It's going to be fabulous. I am with you about getting rid of that step. It will definitely end up being a trip hazard, far better they make a gradual slope down towards your drive. Maybe they will need to stick a track of drainage where the slope meets the drive?

As for a small yard, well our garden is much smaller in comparison to yours and I love it! Just over half of it is the pool and patio area and the other half is grass & flowers and is the tortoise area - we have two!

It could be drainage, it could also have something to do with not having a level landing coming out the door. I think I see a door there to the left of the troublesome area. What are your plans for that small area? My thought is instead of having the decking be a step up, maybe you could have a focal point step up, put a couple plants on either side of it. If you make the stair of visual interest, it will be less likely to be missed. Use a different color, texture, shape for the breezeway path from the door to the deck. Instead of a straight line, add a curve in there, so the breezeway path goes into the deck area a bit, not up to it.

This is my morning thought, before coffee. If you post pics of the area from different angles, it might trigger other ideas.

I would talk to your PB. If they do not put in the step up what does he think will happen? Does the rain run from your driveway into your backyard?

IF they really want to do the step up...................I see another use for some of your blue tiles! Put them on the front side of the step!

I was playing around in excel a bit. I think all you really need to do is have some contrast that catches the eye. Forgive the sloppiness, scale, color, etc. please. I think it could look really nice and not be a tripping hazard.

Thanks for the reminder that smaller gardens have their own magic. There have been times over the years I wished ours was much smaller so I could focus on fewer beds. But I get on this site and see all those gorgeous pools with almost acreage surrounding, and I get greedy.

A tortoise area.... how precious! I would love to see pictures of your garden and especially your tortoises and their area! They must be so happy.

That looks really nice. It is amazing how it all comes together once the mud is gone.

Thank you! You are so right. Get rid of the mud and the entire place looks better!!! I am relieved the mud is GONE with the Granite!

Kim: Our home builder from 26 years ago designed the breezeway walk to drain toward the driveway. I'm not sure why except any such workers concerned with drainage have all seemed to think that's the natural way drainage should go. It's like our own mini Continental Divide. It runs north and south with drainage flowing east to the right of the divide and west to the left of the divide! While living here, we've had 2 other patio/concrete guys here, and they seemed to automatically see the drainage flowing the same. This crew is the 4th. Obviously, there's something they see/know that I don't.

Great idea to use the tile on the riser of the step. My first choice is no step at all. But if it has to be due to slope, then at least ya'll have given me some great options!!!! Thanks so much for that idea!
