Ok people I NEED HELP!!

MUSTARD ALGAE!!!

I can not get rid of this stuff it’s been 3 weeks!! I slammed my pool and kept it at slam level for a week. I Slammed at mustard algae level twice both times for 24 hours. I used two doses of Bioguard Banish. This stuff will not go away!! I sanitized all pool toys and even kept all equipment in water over night i washed all bath stuff with bleach. It keeps coming back and starts in same spot and spreads. It is driving me crazyyyyyy.

Does anyone have an answer.

Here are some pictures
It seems to start out in the seam in my pool and then i start to notice more spots coming.

Here are my pool levels

fc 8
Cc .5
Ph 7.4
Cya 40
Ch 110
Ta 90
When i brush my pool it goes away very easily. Just dissolves but it comes back hours later but never when the chlorine is at shock level. I also vacuumed to waste several times.

You need to look for any spot that can harbor algae. I would also suggest reducing FC slowly from SLAM level. Keep it above the top of the range for a week or two, by 2 ppm. Lower a ppm per week into the normal range. Keep brushing as often as you can.

The HOCl ppm to keep mustard at bay is higher than regular algae. I posted a modified HOCl chart with a mustard algae line.

Thank you for your advice!

i slammed pool twice both for a week each time, i passed over night test, algae came Back so that’s when i knew it was mustard algae. I slammed then did mustard algae slam for 24 hours, it still came back. I repeated that again, still came back. I tried banish with a slam and it still came back. Now i just tried black magic which is sodium bromide andI added the pool shock they told me to. I been brushing several times this whole time. It only comes back in little spots and when i brush it goes away till next day. Now i just added that today. Just checked my fc level and it’s at 7ppm. I did the shock and black magic 7 hours ago. Wondering now if I need to keep adding chlorine until i see no loss and then know the bromide is gone?

Be careful with the bromide. There is another thread here where a person inadvertently turned their pool into a bromide pool. And the only way to get it back is to replace all of the water.

See the chart below. If you know how much FC you lose in a day, you want to target so it definitely does not drop below FC 6 at anytime, if your CYA is 40. The Mustard line is an HOCl of 0.07 ppm.

Sorry i don’t quite understand this. So i added the whole bag of black magic. So I guess i now have a bromine pool. What does this mean? I been reading through out your forum that bromine only gets out by draining water or through the sunlight and is reactivates each time you add chlorine..... I see I just made a mess and wanted this all cleared up so I could close pool up and come back to a clear pool next year!!! So what do I need to do now just keep my chlorine level higher? Sorry I messed up i just felt I had no options left with just slamming. I will keep brushing. And I’ll check all spots.

The other person added something like 8-10 lbs of a bromine to the pool. I personally don't know much about bromine (never used any of the bromine products). But only a few weeks ago someone added a LOT of bromine to the pool. Just a caution to be careful and truly understand what you're adding to your water.

now i see u have an above ground pool - definitely remove the ladder/steps & clean/inspect it. a quick search here will show ladders/steps filled with algae.
Until u remove the source it will keep returning.

Ok I will do this after tomorrow because they are drilled into our deck. I just checked and this am my fc was 12. Just checked again and it’s .5 and i brushed this am and algae spots were back right now so maybe it is in there. I just put a whole gallon of bleach in to keep up with the fc loss here. How long does it keep eating away the chlorine?

SoMe one recommended get phosphate free and put it in what do you think of that?
