Greetings. Over the past couple of months my family and I have suffered unimaginable family tragedy. I won't bother with details but imagine your worst nightmare. During this time I've neglected the pool and it is now a green swamp. It's so bad I can't see the bottom or more than a foot or so into the water. I've been looking here and seeing advice for algae outbreak about just draining the pool and starting over. As you can see from signature I have a vinyl pool. Would draining the entire pool cause shifting or damage to the liner? The liner is about eight years old. It's cold here in NC, but I usually put a leaf net over it and keep it chlorinated during the winter. I guess waiting to address this will just be harder the longer I wait, but since it's cold would it make any difference? Focusing on the pool would likely be a good distraction but availability of liquid chlorine could be a problem if I decide to attack without draining. Thanks

Sorry to hear of your tragedies. Hope things work out soon.

With a vinyl pool, it is not wise to drain more than 18 inches or so. So I would not do that.

What is your CYA level? Doing a SLAM at a reasonable CYA level should be pretty easy this time of year. It will be slow, but you will not consume as much chlorine.

Thank you. I'm not sure of CYA, will measure after this storm is over (lots of rain tonite). But since I've been pumping off water lately due to rain, I bet it's fairly low. Good point about that. I have about 7-8 gallons in the garage, I can probably scrounge up some more somewhere. Will attack this way. Before and after pics one day.
