We will be putting an inground pool in in a few weeks. We have a four-year-old and are concerned about him accidentally wandering off and falling into the pool. Can you guys give a good recommendation on an alarm? Also are they very reliable and do you get many false alarms?

If you're building a new pool, you will need to comply with local building requirements for barriers and alarms. Your pool builder will likely provide you with your area's guidelines. You can probably find the requirements on your municipality's website. Best to check first before you shop around for alarms.

Be sure to look at a pool fence. The alarms are not very sophisticated and can be annoying.

We have an alarm (this one) but it is ONLY for an extra layer of protection for OUR PETS...not for children. It works fairly well and for the one time one of our 14 pound dogs fell in, it did go off. BUT, it does tend to set off false alarms but only when it's pretty windy out. Would I rely on it as the ONLY protection? NO way, NO how.

I thought I'd revive this from last week in hopes of a few more good or bad suggestions!

I have a current inground pool.. so no code requirements.. but a 2 1/2 year old who now loves to swim and may not understand she can't just go by herself. We have a fence that will be locked but it would be nice to have a second layer. I see some options for floating ones as well as L shaped ones where an arm sinks in the pool. Anyone used either of those other than the one mentioned above?

Thanks,
Chris

I would love to hear your suggestions as well. We purchased this and it was a complete joke. Went off at 4AM in the morning several times when the dogs were sleeping right next to us. No water or slober in sight. Might buy the buoy mentioned above. Amazon.com : New Safety Turtle 2.0 Pet Immersion Pool/Water Alarm Kit - 2 Petbands : Garden & Outdoor
If you get the buoy, purchase it from somewhere that has easy returns as it too has false alarms. They aren't too much of a nuisance in our case since they are caused by either heavy rain or very windy conditions. Nonethelesss, it isn't very cheap and if it causes too many false alarms, I am sure you'd like to get your money back.

Another follower! We will have a child safety fence, but are thinking about a second layer of protection. I would love an in-pool alarm that you can turn on and off remotely.
We'll have a screen enclosure and walls on two sides of the pool, so that might mitigate wind-related false alarms.
Does anyone have an in-pool alarm that they really like?

Thanks,

Seems to be a dead thread, but something I'm interested in. Anyone buy something and have a follow up?

Would be nice if there was like an underwater motion sensor, but this area of consumer products appears to be full of subjective opinions and no sure winners.

I was just researching an alarm, new grandkids. I saw one that had an underwater sensor but now I cannot find the link again. We have 2 gates, what kind of locks do people use? To prevent little ones from opening them. I have the push down rod kind that releases the latch over 54” high. I may invest in the floating alarm that has adjustable sensor for surface water disruption.
