Air inside filter

I dealt with back pressure related to air in the basket/filter for the longest time until just recently. Air would get compressed in the filter when in use, and turning off pump would release this pressure shaking the plumbing and blowing the lid off the skimmer. I believe over time this led to my PVC unions starting to leak.

Even after replacing the suction side plumbing entirely, I would still have a decent amount of air in my basket and thus backpressure. My cause was a slight air gap where the suction side plumbing connects to the pump. If I took a garden hose and sprayed water directly where the suction line connected to the pump, magically the basket is now full of water with zero air bubbles.

This was on a ~9 year old Hayward single speed super pump that I had replaced the basket gasket on probably 4x already and hated dealing with, so recently replaced with a Pentair VST and haven't seen a single air bubble in so far. Replaced the sand filter for good measure as well. I was so used to hearing that backpressure release each time I shut off the pump it's kind of like PTSD, will take a while to get used to silence!
