Advice on next steps

Hi folks,
My pool pump broke a few days ago and I was only able to replace it yesterday. It was 3 days down and we have had a few rain storms and lots of heat.
The pool water had turned a darker gray color before the new pump was installed. I vacuumed the floor and sides as soon as the pump restated. Its been on for 12 hours now without much improvement.
Test results this morning are:
FC-3.5
PH-8.0
CYA-50
Can you give me advice on how to get back to perfect water (which I've had all summer) in the shortest time.
Shall I consider SLAMming?

Thanks,
T

I didnt maintain it as was out of country but did test it before I left and levels were similar.
I'e added some Muriatic acid to reduce the PH.
Im curious, why would a lower PH level help clear the water.....?
Thanks,

You are recommended to lower your pH to 7.2 prior to SLAM as during a SLAM you cannot accurately test pH as your FC will be above 10 ppm.

Your pool is not far from being clear. I do not think you need to SLAM......try this first. Elevate your chlorine to about 10 ppm and then hold it there for about two days. I think you will see marked improvement towards blue. The pic was VERY helpful.

Your filter is probably not the source of your problem but you should learn how to clean it anyway and then do so. There are articles in Pool School to teach you how. Run your pump 24/7 until you are back to crystal clear blue water.

Please read "The "ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry" up in Pool School........that may help you quite a bit.

Not to question your assessement, but from the Pics your pool looks green to me, not grey. Sort of sea green. However, you are seeing it live and we're just seeing pics. I guess it could be me... Green, I believe, would indicate algae, but if your OCLT is good I'm not sure.

I think a good filter cleaning might well help. Do you have an idea of the last time it was cleaned. As mentioned, there are good threads on how to clean. It's not too hard once you figure it out. From googling 'Hayward Pro Series' it looks like it's most likely a sand filter, but maybe more specifics or a pic of the filter would help folks here know what you have and point you further in the right direction.

Also, search for 'how to post pictures' as well. There are several threads on how to do it and use services like flicker or photobucket. (I've been advised against posting links to photos.)

With that color it suggests a SLAM is needed.

Any pool store potions added lately? Any copper containing items? Well water? What city / state / country is this pool located in?

I'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
I started SLAmming a few days ago - moved the FC level to 16 with a CYA of 40 however the improvement has been really small. The water color has gone from a greener color to emerald bluey green. I'll post a pic when I get home.
Im thinking that it may be a filter issue and that I should consider cleaning the sand filter. Do you recommend adding a degreaser to the filter or inserting a hose into the sand (as per TFP site).
My pool is 5 years old and I've never done a deep clean of the filter. That being said, I've had wonderful water for most of the season.

Trevsand:

You are making progress. Take a picture of the same area each day around the same time. Keep the SLAM according to the schedule. You will make progress. In about 2 days, as your liquid chlorine additions decrease, you may consider adding some DE alternative, like Fiber Clear as this will push things along pretty quickly. If you do, watch your pressure carefully as you may have to backwash the same day. Once you are done and pass all the tests, wait until the season is over, prior to closing and then perform a deep cleaning of the sand filter. Please keep us posted!
