Advice for cloudy water?

(Yes it's in my signature. Not to take from her thread. Takes 1.25 hours a full turn. My debris from the trees for the most part is down to a couple leaves a day now. There are no dead spots, we swim daily. Fields are done being worked, the corn has broken through and is growing like crazy. When we are going nuts with yard work I increase and I increase with weekend bather-load as well. I have no cc's, and the only people who have water as clear as mine are members here. So with that instead of blindly running the filter x amount of hours a day I am really trying to dial in on where I need to be. I may end up needing to run it more, but I will know before anything gets away from me, that's why I bought the kit so I can stay on top of things like that :) )

My hat is off to you. I feel like I am barely surviving at this point, and I am off for the summer. Second baby is sooo much more difficult than the first - he wants to eat constantly, so I feel tethered to the rocking chair! Thanks for your advice, kit is ordered, so we will see.

You should really wait until your test kit arrives. The CYA test has shown to be the one pool $tores most often get wrong. If they give you a value lower than your actual CYA you will not be maintaining the correct FC/CYA ratio and the algae will laugh at you while it gobbles up all the chlorine. If they give you a value higher than actual all the excess chlorine you add will just go to waste & burn off in the sun. Both of those options will waste your time, with the latter being very harsh on your pool.

Stay the course, and open a can of POP (Pool Owner Patience).

Is it 8.25% sodium hypochlorite?

What brand is it?

Could you post a picture of the label?

I know that regular Clorox is 8.25% sodium hypochlorite with a yield 7.85% available chlorine.

You're cool with that. I always like to dose when possible in the evening when the sun is off the water. So sometime this evening if you have the chance introduce the chlorine to the water, with the filter running and if anyone can brush that would only help the cause.

1 gallon is plenty per day for your size pool to keep the problem from getting worse and perhaps making some initial progress. What you don't want is way too much FC to either risk fading your pool surface or when your kit does arrive, you don't want your FC to be so high that the pH test is unreliable. At FC levels 10 or above, the pH test is not accurate.

ummm.... I'm not sure what you have been aiming for? Which test kit gave you these results? Have you seen our recommended levels--> Pool School - Recommended Levels
 
I'm aiming for a pool without cloudy water. It has improved, but it is not quite clear.

In looking at the FC test, looking at the directions in the testing post, it says to fill to the 9ml mark. Our test kit (Taylor-2006) doesn't have a 9ml mark. Husband is annoyed and I'm confused. Is it possible the FC is 7, not 70?
 
Okay Lets back up a step.....I have a Taylor 2006 as well so can "see" what you should be seeing. You are correct there is NO 9ml mark. There is 44,25, 10.....I am not sure where you read about a 9ml mark.

Lets walk through a FC test okay?

-get pool water in a clean, plastic cup.

-Pour said pool water into the larger tube to the 10 line.

-Put one large scoop of R-0870 using the little blue spoon.

-Swirl the water around until most of the powder is dissolved. There might be some pieces still left. It should turn pink.

-Using R-0871 (brown bottle with yellow top) put ONE drop at a time into the above water and swirl the water after each drop. Keep adding drops ONE AT A TIME until the water turns clear (it might be a little cloudy/grayish but NO pink). Stop and make a note of how many drops you added.

-Each drop is worth .5 ppm notice there is a dot in front of the 5.

So if you put in 6 drops to change the pink to clearish you would have a FC of 3 ppm.

I hope this helps. Let us know what you find with your next test.

Ok, thank you! Will double check. He's in with the baby now, but I'm guessing he put in 14 drops, which would be FC of 28. According to the chart, my shock FC would be 31, I believe, if I am understanding it correctly (CYA of 80)

When I use the PoolMath, it says to add bleach of 6%. I think mine is 7.85% (see above post)... is that correct? Or is 6% the standard?
