Adding skimmer and converting to PVC

Hey everyone,
I am about to add a skimmer and convert to 1.5" pvc for my 16x32" intex pool. Is there a max distance away from the return I can install the skimmer? Or is it more effective to keep them closer to each other like the stock config? My pump is the
I was thinking about installing it this way (attached image).

No, You can put one at each end if you want.

Or is it more effective to keep them closer to each other like the stock config?

The further the skimmer and return is the better the water circulation will be in the pool.

I would put them at least on different sides. Are you hard piping it?
