What household chemicals do I use instead of buying them from the pool store?

There are several. The full list is in Pool School. A few quick examples: instead of getting total alkalinity increaser use baking soda, same chemical and a much better price at the grocery store. Instead of buying chlorine at the pool store, you can use household bleach, usually very competitively priced at the grocery store.
