Here is how mine are plumbed more or less. My VRV is on the supply side which is useful when lowering the flow rates/pressure through the panels:
As a minimum, I would suggest the following:
1 - Check valve after the filter
2 - Check valve on the solar return
3 - Vacuum release valve on the highest point on the supply side of the panels (see optional location). However, if you have a very steep roof or the return plumbing needs to go over the top of the roof, it might be best to put the VRV on the return side of the panels at the highest location.
4 - Solar valve is optional and good to have if you already have a controller. This can also be used to bypass some of the water around solar although you can use a separate bypass pipe between the supply and return.
