It often isn't safe to swim in a pond. The reason it is ever safe is that a pond is a functioning eco system with lots of competition. In a healthy pond safe bacteria/algae tends to crowd out the ore dangerous stuff. In a swimming pool, the eco system is normally way way out of balance and just about anything can easily grow in the water, good stuff as well as harmful.
