My 3-year old 33' round Stealth pool has been neglected. I have decided to take over caretaking responsibilities, but am not certain where to start. Pretty much the only thing that has been done year after year is dumping dozens of packets of shock in it. 2 years ago (summer 2022), the pool was used pretty frequently. Last year, I'm not sure it was used (maybe once). I'm in Wisconsin and the pool has never been properly shut down for winter.
My very first question - in testing the pool there is obviously no chlorine in it at this point. The pH is high. And the calcium hardness is VERY high. PoolMath tells me I need to remove 2/3 of the water. I am first wondering if that seems accurate since the pool has been rained (and snowed) in so much in the last couple years - and if it does seem accurate, is there an alternative to draining the pool (as in, cleaning, getting chlorine added, and adding pHDown, for example) - would those things naturally start getting the calcium hardness down, or is removing most of the water the place for me to start in order to get this thing back on track?
