2 gal of chlorine a week?

What's up with that??
Science. CYA binds most of the harsh component of the chlorine so the higher the CYA, the higher the FC can go while still being safe.

Click here too ---> FC/CYA Levels

Another thing my pool is weird shape. progressivly deaper to the 8.5 deepend. how do i measure it and come up with accurate gallonage?
Take average measurements of the wall widths and start with a guesstimate. Dial it in with chemical additions such as how far the muriatic acid lowered the Ph, or that the CYA addition did what it was supposed to.

I grew up in the 80s and I have always heard and read everywhere even in my adulthood that you can't swim while you're shocking or suplerchlorinating a pool. cant swim if its over 5 ppm. and then I find this forum, and everyone says go right ahead even if it's 16 FC.
What's up with that??

The use of CYA.

Read and then we can discuss.

Area of Polygon by Drawing is a neat website for plotting all those Freeform pools. The default shape on the graph is a pentagon but you can add points by pressing the up arrow and I got bored pressing it well after making a 100+ sided shape. If you zoom out on the graph you can make your Freeform pool shape with just a few measurements and round off all the extra points.

The area is shown up top at all times and multiply it by the average depth for cubic feet. Multiply that by 7.481 gallons per cf and it should be pretty accurate.

help. at 12 pm my fc was 15. added half gal
at 5 it was 12.5 . added 1.5 gal
at 730 my FC is 24!!! It was suppose to be 16 at the max.

i didn't think it would go up that high! ( i suppose since i have hardly any algae at this point)
and my kids were swimming in it! did i majorly mess up and put them at risk?

ok thanks i'll be reading the cya article and play with plotting my gallonage.

@sande005 @ajw22 here is my log.
im getting frustrated
how i the heck am i still losing 6 points over night! (its been 12 hours) 730pm to 7 am.
went from 24 FC 18.
im using 10%
i guess i don't know how to use pool math app.
i got to log my first thing and its prompting me to upgrade for unlimited logs. im not trying to be cheap but ..i can't even log one thing?! :cautious:

With the free version you need to delete the prior log to save a new one. Just use pen and paper to record it at that point.

Oooooo. Or maybe you can write it all in the notes and that will save.

Or spend the $8 for the year and unlock the features.

Don't look at it that way. Look at it that it will take XX gallons to kill the organics and every gallon added brings you closer to the end point. FC loss, especially overnight, means you're killing stuff and making progress.

Your overnight was 12 whole hours, that loss lines up similar to your daytime losses if you add them up.
At first the algae is a hungry beast but you will soon have the upper hand.
just keep being consistent with your slam level replenishment during waking hours.
To prevent fc from falling so low overnight try to get a dose in before bed.
Also be sure to do all the things

WOAHHHH! wait .look what I found @Mdragger88

This has been an abandoned auto fill thing which I have never used and I don’t know how it works or even if it works.

Is that white hole in the pool connected to the inner basket of this nasty thing?

I tried shoving a wooden dowel through there but I could not get it all the way through it was hitting something. maybe a bend in the pipe?

Is this where my freaking algae is coming from?

I shop vacked the black nasty water out. And then all the clear water came pouring in.

But if they were connected I assumed all the black water would start coming into my pool via that white hole but nothing came back into my pool. Maybe that’s cuz the inflow of water prevented it?

What do I do should I plug up one of those holes somehow?04FC4CCE-96F9-4E70-94E4-7031BBB74ED7.jpeg8DD034E4-AF66-4425-80BA-CF1399B05105.jpegD19C4789-4BB9-4C2D-ACA7-E6761C0DEDEF.jpeg

Yup, that is an autofill connected to the white pipe.

The clear water came pouring in from your pool?

I would get a winterizing plug and plug the pipe in the canister.

im assuming the clear water came in from the pool. is there somewhere else it would come from?
again, i thought black water would have been coming out the white pipe into the pool if they were connected. right?

if they are connected is this likely the source of my algae?

i couldn't shove the wood dowel through all the way. is there another way to test?

The autofill line.

Do you have a flexible snake to put in from either side and see if it goes through or you hit an obstruction?

ok I dumped some chlorine in that canister and I saw it come out the white hole into my pool along with debris so it is confirmed it is leading into my pool. I'm going to get a plug right now..

I can't believe this has been my source of algae for seven years and I never put two and two together. wow!

You could always kill the grass within 6"-12" of the autofill, remove all the dead grass, clean out the autofill and figure out how to turn on the water supply to it. Having a functioning autofill is almost a requirement in the desert southwest with our high evaporation rates.

You might also need to replace the fill valve. They are available at any pool supply or you can find them at HD, Lowes, Ace, etc near the swamp cooler supplies.

Update your account details with city, state.

Tell us about your pool by completing your signature with information on your pool, all pool equipment (include manufacturers and model numbers) and test kit.

And, it is worth it to pay the $8/year for Pool Math. You can then use the same username you have here, and link it. Then we can see your current and history also. No more retyping! Click on my user name to see my logs in my lurching toward getting my pool fully up and balanced.
